Oct. 14, 2007 Washington, D.C. - The day began with thousands of Georgetown University students forming lines that stretched from the front of McDonough Arena, around the school's tennis courts, up the road behind the Multi-Sport Field and all the way up to Yates Field House. The night concluded with the son of the greatest player in Georgetown basketball history teaching a dance to one of the greatest wide receivers in the history of the National Football League. In between, a packed house at McDonough Arena welcomed the 2007-08 Georgetown University men's and women's basketball teams at Midnight Madness Friday night. University students began lining up outside McDonough four hours before the doors opened for the chance to get tickets to make their way in for the evening festivities. Prior to the doors opening, fans were treated to a broadcast of Georgetown's 96-84 win over North Carolina in the NCAA East Regional Final that advanced the Hoyas to the 2007 Final Four. Nationally-recognized college basketball analyst Bill Raftery and a crew from ESPNU were on hand to broadcast the events. Once inside, students were entertained by performances from the Georgetown dance team, cheerleaders, pep band and Groove Theory. Prior to the introductions of the team, a framed No. 22 Seattle Supersonics jersey, the number that will be worn by former Hoya All-American Jeff Green, was added to the Hoyas' NBA jersey wall. Both the men's and women's basketball teams were introduced to the crowd, with each team member dancing to mid-court with their own song. When senior center Roy Hibbert came on to the floor, to "Eye of the Tiger" - with Georgetown students adding their chorus of "Roy, Roy, Roy, Roy" - he brought the student section to a frenzy as he joined them in the crowd. Former NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice, whose daughter attends the University, was in attendance and he was brought to mid-court, where he was tutored by Ewing in the dance steps for "Crank That."
Perhaps the highlight of the evening came when Head Men's Basketball Coach John Thompson III had the Hoyas' four senior captains - Ewing, Tyler Crawford, Patrick Ewing, Jr. and Jonathan Wallace - unveil the 2007 Final Four banner. |
