New Website to Commemorate Georgetown 100-Year Basketball Anniversary

Nov. 7, 2006

Washington, D.C. - When the Georgetown University men's basketball team tips off the 2006-07 season on Saturday, November 11 at the Verizon Center, it will be more than just the start to one of the most anticipated seasons in recent years. The Hoya squad that takes the floor against the University of Hartford will begin the 100th year of play for the University in men's basketball.

The Hoyas, ranked No. 8 nationally in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll and in the Associated Press national poll, play on Saturday at noon against the Hawks in the season opener for both teams.

On that same day, the Georgetown Athletic Department will be launching an interactive site - devoted entirely to the celebration of the 100-Year Anniversary. The site was co-developed by the Athletic Department in conjunction with MMG Worldwide. It can be accessed by visiting www.guhoyas.com.

The interactive site offers Georgetown fans the opportunity to experience the history and highlights - including the great names and the great games - of one of the most storied programs in Division I basketball.

A much anticipated feature of the site will be an area where fans can vote for the program's All-Century Team. This team will consist of 25 players from three distinct generations of Georgetown Basketball - Vintage (1907-43), Classic (1943-72) and Modern (1972-present). Each candidate profile will have a short biography and an accompanying picture.

The All-Century Team will be unveiled on Saturday, February 10, when the Hoyas host BIG EAST rival Marquette at the Verizon Center.

Men's basketball at Georgetown University began in the 1906-07 season, when the Hoyas played four games, winning two of them. The program quickly established itself as one of the leading teams in the East, advancing to the Final Four in 1942-43 and to the National Invitation Tournament in 1953 and 1970. In 1972, John Thompson, Jr. was named the program's head coach and he guided the team to at least 20 wins in 19 of 24 seasons, three National Championship games, including the 1984 NCAA title.
