Georgetown Takes Court on Saturday, Hosting Drexel in Non-League Game

Nov. 21, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The 22nd-ranked Georgetown University men's basketball team takes the court at Verizon Center for its second game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 22, a non-league contest against Drexel. The Hoyas and Dragons will tip off at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 570, with Rich Chvotkin providing all of the action.

Georgetown opened the 2008-09 season on Monday, beating Jacksonville 71-62 at Verizon Center, their third-straight win in a season opener. The Hoyas are ranked No. 22 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and are No. 18 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Georgetown and Drexel. The Hoyas have an all-time record of 22-8 against teams from the Colonial Athletic Association.

Sophomore guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College High School) scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures for the Hoyas in the win over Jacksonville. Wright also added five rebounds and four assists. Freshman center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) added 14 points, connecting on 6-of-10 shots from the field, and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]) added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, while junior DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) added 13 points and four boards.

The Hoyas connected on 40.4 percent of their field goals (21-of-52), 21.7 percent of their three-pointers (5-of-23) and 72.7 percent of their free throws (24-of-33). GU was out-rebounded, 44-37, handed out 11 assists and had 11 turnovers.

Drexel (1-0) opened its season earlier this week with a 66-64 win over Penn. Drexel is coming off a 2007-08 season in which the team finished 12-20 overall and 5-13 in the CAA. The Dragons were picked to finish 12th of 12 teams in the league, but the team has reached the NIT four times in the last eight years, including a 23-9 record during the 2006-07 season. Senior guards Tramayne Hawthorne and Scott Rodgers lead a team that has five underclassmen returning and four newcomers.

Hawthorne scored 16 points and had six rebounds against Penn, while Rodgers added 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Jamie Harris added nine points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Dragons shot 37.3 percent from the floor (22-of-59), including 25.0 percent from three-point land, where they hit 5-of-20 attempts. Drexel controlled the boards, 47-43, had 14 assists and 12 turnovers and shot 53.1 percent (17-of-32) from the free throw line.

This will be the second game of the season at Verizon Center for Georgetown. The Hoyas have won their last 21 games in their downtown home, including their last 11 against non-league opponents.

Former Georgetown University All-American center Alonzo Mourning will be signing copies of his new book in the concourse of Verizon Center from noon until 1 p.m. and during halftime. His new book, "Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph," describes the numerous battles he faced in his life, and how he overcame them to end up where he is today.

Georgetown hits the road for a trio of games during Thanksgiving weekend, playing in the Old Spice Classic. The Hoyas will play Wichita State in the first round, on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.
