The No. 21-ranked Georgetown University men's basketball arrived in Orlando on Tuesday evening as the team prepared to face Wichita State in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic, being played at the Milk House. The Hoyas will tip off on Thursday, Nov. 27 against the Shockers at 2 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN2, with Bob Wischusen calling the play-by-play, Len Elmore handling the color and Andy Katz on sidelines. It can be heard locally on ESPN 980, with Rich Chvotkin providing all of the action. The Hoyas were ranked No. 21 in the country in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, and moved up to No. 16 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll. Georgetown has won its first two games of the season, beating Jacksonville, 71-62, and then posting an 81-53 win over Drexel on Saturday at Verizon Center. This will be the first meeting between Georgetown and Wichita State. The Hoyas have played teams from the Missouri Valley Conference six times, the last a 54-49 win over Northern Iowa during the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas have been led by a group of underclassmen in their first two games this season. Freshman center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) leads the team in scoring and rebounding, tallying 17.5 points per game and grabbing 7.5 rebounds per game. He has blocked a team-high eight shots. Sophomore guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College High School) is second on the team in scoring with 13.5 points per game, leads the team with 5.5 assists per game and is third on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game. Monroe led the Hoyas in the win over Drexel, scoring 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, grabbing eight rebounds, blocking three shots, handing out four assists and recording three steals. Wright, meanwhile, connected on 5-of-10 shots for 11 points and handed out a career-high seven assists. Junior DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) is third on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game and third in rebounding, grabbing 4.0 boards per game. Summers scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in the opener against Jacksonville and then had 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals against Drexel. He has connected on a team-best 91.7 percent (11-of-12) of his free throws. Sophomore guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) is averaging 11.5 points and is second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game. He tied his career-high with seven rebounds against Jacksonville and then scored 16 points, grabbed five boards and had three assists against Drexel. Senior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]) is averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game. He scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists in the Jacksonville win, and then added eight points and a career-high five steals against Drexel. The Hoyas are shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and lead the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, allowing opponents to shoot only 30.5 percent from the floor. GU is also first in the league in free throw percentage, connecting on 78.2 percent of their shots from the charity stripe. The winner of the Wichita State-Georgetown game will advance to play the winner of a game between Siena and Tennessee on Friday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. The loser will play the loser of the Siena-Tennessee game on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
