Georgetown's Greg Monroe Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week; Austin Freeman Named to Old Spice Classic All-Tournament Team

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University freshman men's basketball player Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) was named the BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Monroe helped lead the Hoyas to two wins in three games at the Old Spice Classic, including a 75-48 win over local rival Maryland on Sunday evening, guaranteeing the Blue & Gray a third place finish in the tournament.

Georgetown improved to 4-1 overall after its trip to Disney World, which included a 58-50 win over Wichita State on Thanksgiving Day and a 90-78 loss to No. 12 Tennessee in the semifinals. The Hoyas moved up to No. 20 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and are ranked No. 18 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll.

Monroe, a freshman center who has started all five games for GU, averaged 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals in three games, while shooting 65.0 percent from the floor (13-of-20). Monroe scored 11 points, had four rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals in the team's 58-50 win over Wichita State to open the tournament. He followed that up with 15 points, three rebounds and two steals in the loss to Tennessee. Monroe was a big factor in the team's 75-48 win over Maryland on Sunday, scoring 12 points and grabbing six boards.

For the season, Monroe is leading the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.4 points and 5.6 boards, and tops the squad with 2.4 blocks. Monroe ranks 20th in the BIG EAST in scoring per game, tied for sixth in field goal percentage (66.7%, 26-of-39) and fourth in blocked shots.

Georgetown sophomore Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Old Spice Classic. Freeman led the Hoyas during the weekend, averaging 16.0 points per game, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 60.7 percent from the floor (13-of-20).

 

 

Freeman scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed four rebounds during the Hoyas 58-50 win over Wichita State on Thursday. He scored 12 points, had five rebounds and four assists in the loss to Tennessee and then followed that up with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds in the win over Maryland on Sunday.

The sophomore is second on the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game, second in rebounding with 5.4 boards per game, third with 2.2 assists per game and is second on the team in field goal percentage (53.3%, 24-of-45).

Georgetown returns home to host American on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Verizon Center. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be shown live on MASN and can be heard locally on AM 570.
