Evans Liolin brings many years of collegiate and international experience and success to the Hilltop, having worked with the United States Junior National Team, the USRowing Lightweight Development Camp, and three different universities. In his first year with the Hoyas, Liolin's Varsity Eight won the bronze medal at the IRA Men's National Championship. Liolin came to Georgetown from Yale University, where he served as the Freshman Heavyweight Coach and made a significant impact on the program, as evidenced by improving results during his tenure. In 2003, his crew earned bronze in the Head of the Charles, the Elis' best result there in four years. His 2004 crew won the bronze at the IRA National Championship, their strongest performance in seven years. In 2006, his Yale freshmen won the historic Yale-Harvard Regatta earning their first victory over the Crimson since 2000. In October 2001, Liolin was named the Head Men's Coach of the U.S. Junior National Team as he became, and still remains, the only U.S. coach to medal in the eight in back-to-back Junior World Championships. His crews finished with the gold and silver medals in the intermediate eight and gold in the senior four during the 2002 U.S. National Championships, bronze in the men's eight during the 2002 World Junior Championships and the silver medal in the men's eight during the 2003 World Junior Championships. While coaching the U.S. team, Liolin also worked with the boys' crews at the Belmont Hill School and Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School in Cambridge, MA. Prior to his stint with the U.S. Junior National Team, Evans had moved to New England and spent four years working with the Northeastern University Men's Crew. He served as the Assistant Varsity Coach from 1997-98 and then as the Freshman Heavyweight Coach from 1998-2001. During his time at Northeastern, he also served as the Assistant Men's Coach and then as the Head Men's Coach of the USRowing Lightweight Development Camp at Riverside Boat Club. Upon leaving Northeastern, Liolin was named the Head Men's Coach at the Boston Rowing Club, where his undefeated squad garnered gold medals at the U.S. National Championships and Royal Canadian Henley. They were subsequently named 2001 Junior Crew of the Year. Following his graduation from the University of Chicago, Liolin served as the Head Women's Coach at Loyola Academy in Illinois. There, he coached three undefeated crews and helped his 1997 junior women's eight earn a Midwest Championship. Liolin graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in religion and the humanities, while also studying in philosophy and English. As an undergraduate, he served as the team captain and then as the Head Men's Coach from 1992-94. As coach, his crews won races for the first time in five years and earned medals in regional competition. Liolin first learned to row at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA. |
