CAMDEN, N.J. – The Hoyas began their racing season Saturday at the fourth annual Jesuit Invitational Regatta on the Cooper River.

The Hoya heavyweight squad continued their dominance of the regatta, winning the overall points trophy for the third year in a row. Georgetown has won the points trophy every year they have attended the regatta. As usual, this race was marked by a stiff wind and rough water, ensuring that the course would be challenging

In the varsity eight event, Georgetown found itself three seats behind St. Joseph’s, and even with Holy Cross off the start, as both crews were quick off the line and were rowing at a significantly higher stroke rating than the Hoyas.  Able to maintain their composure, the Hoyas finally hit a comfortable stride with 1200 meters to go in the race. At the half-way mark, Georgetown drew even and began to quickly move away. With the race in command with 500 meters to go, Georgetown maintained a three second margin for the win, with a time of 5:57. Following the Hoyas were Holy Cross (6:00.2), St. Joseph’s (6:03.2), Boston College (6:14.7), and Fairfield (6:57.7).

In the junior varsity eight event, the Hoyas were able to overcome a quick start by Holy Cross, which left them a seat behind for much of the early part of the race. With a series of strong moves, they eventually overtook the Crusaders, beating them by 1.38 seconds.

The varsity four, which faced stiff competition from Loyola and Boston College, finished third, ten seconds out of the lead, but only 1.06 seconds out of second place. The Hoyas (7:16.09), were followed by Fairfield (7:23.65) and the Georgetown lightweight four (7:31.70).

The freshman eight, in their first spring race for the Hoyas, finished in second place, thirteen seconds behind St. Joseph’s. Georgetown (6:22.2) was followed by Boston College (6:33.2) and Loyola (6:57.4).

The Georgetown lightweight eight raced two boats, finishing first and fourth in a field of six.  The A boat set a strong pace to finish 2.6 seconds ahead of Boston College while the B squad downed Holy Cross and Fordham.

The freshman lightweight eight also put two boats in a field of five, placing first and fourth.  The A squad once again led the race, defeating St. Joe’s by 3.5 seconds while the B team finished just short of third, one place ahead of Fordham.

The heavyweight Hoyas travel to New Brunswick, N.J. on Sunday, March 30 to take on Rutgers.
