The Men’s Varsity Lightweight Crew opened competition at the Henley Royal Regatta on Wednesday, June 30, with a win over the heavyweights from Boston University. The “verdict” was 1 and one-quarter lengths over BU in what Coach Andy Belden described as a “screaming headwind.” Despite the conditions, the Hoyas posted the second fastest time of the day (7:03), a time that the Navy lightweights also matched in their opening round win over Kings College of London. In addition to Georgetown, Navy and Boston University, Harvard (frosh heavies) and the University of Rhode Island are the other American crews in the event, both of them also winning their opening races.

The Hoyas started well and were about a seat up on the BU crew as the boats cleared the end of Temple Island, about 200 meters into the course. Georgetown continued to walk away, even though BU mounted several strong attacks and challenged Georgetown from a half length deficit for much of the race. Coming into the sprint, the Hoyas turned it on to cement their lead and finished with a length and a quarter lead.

The fastest time of the day (6:52) was posted by D.S.R. Proteus-Eretes of Holland. As luck would have it, this is the Hoyas’ next opponent, with the race scheduled for Thursday’s. “The boys will have to be on their game, but it's doable,” said Coach Belden after watching the Dutch crew.
