Men's Lightweight Crew defeats Princeton and Columbia

April 2, 2001

The Hoyas lightweight crew (men) defeated defending Eastern Sprints champions Columbia and higher ranked Princeton in their tri-meet at Princeton, N.J. The fast Georgetown crew led from start to finish on the 2000-meter course on Lake Carnegie.

There was little separation off the start but Georgetown's strong settle allowed the Hoyas to push out from the field. Georgetown led Columbia by nearly a full length in the second 500 meters, with Princeton trailing Columbia by three seats. Princeton (1-1) used a strong third 500 to pull level with Columbia and eat away at Georgetown's lead. However, Georgetown led by eight seats with 500 meters to go and Princeton's sprint - which allowed it to push past Columbia - was too little too late as the Hoyas held on to a 5-seat margin as the crews crossed the finish line. All three crews finished within 2.5 seconds of each other, 5:58.3, 5:59.88, 5:59.93.

The Hoyas were not as fortunate in the second varsity race, as Princeton jumped out to a lead off the start and coasted to a seven-second victory over Columbia with Georgetown taking third. Also, in the first freshman race, GU claimed third with a time of 6:28.95, 23 seconds of the time of the first place Tigers (6:05.8).

Georgetown's heavyweight men will race Cornell at Princeton, N.J. on April 7. The women battle MIT and Drexel at Philadelphia, Pa. also on Saturday, April 7.
