Dennis Jackson and Hoyas Near End of Summer Football Workouts

July 25, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University football team finishes its last full week of conditioning work this week before holding its final preseason sessions next week. The season will unofficially kick off on Thursday, July 31 when Head Coach Kevin Kelly and the team's captains - senior Nick Umar (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Dan Matheny (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) - represent the team at Patriot League Media Day.

Before the final workouts, and before Media Day, junior defensive back Dennis Jackson (Miramar, Fla./Northwestern) provided updated the team's summer journal with a recap of the past week.

"This summer has been a tremendous experience and challenge for all our guys who push themselves each and everyday in this brutal DC summer heat. We have been going at it for about nine weeks now and you can definitely feel the anxiety from all of our teammates as we closely approach summer training camp.

"One of our mottoes that we took from our coaches was to be in "excellent condition" and I'm proud to say that we are inching closer to that goal. I personally believe that our team has accomplished a ton this summer in regards to strength and conditioning. However, we have plenty of work to do in our quest to bring a championship back here on the Hilltop.

"Earlier this month, we began our second session of summer workouts, with more guys pouring onto campus and reunited with their teammates. As I walked into the weight room that Monday and saw a majority of our incoming freshmen and teammates from last season, I must admit that I was really excited and couldn't wait to get to work. Now with about 60 or so guys back on campus, you can definitely feel camp fast approaching.

"This week, we have a 7-on-7 scrimmage versus Morgan State, who we also scrimmaged last week. The 7-on-7 competitions gives our guys a chance to compete against some of the schools around the area and it also gives a chance for our young guys to get comfortable in our system and learn the plays that we'll be running during camp and the rest of the season.

"Next week will be our last week of workout before we enter into the summer preseason. The most important thing for our team to do next week is to finish strong as we roll into camp. Head Strength and Conditioning coach Augie Maurelli has done a great job this summer ensuring that we are physically fit and ready to take on this grueling upcoming season. I'm not making any predictions but I can assure you that the Hoyas will be a force to be reckoned with this year."

Georgetown football players report for the first day of the 2008 season on Thursday, August 7 and the team's first practice will be held on Friday, August 8.
