WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown sophomore Jamarr Staples (Roanoke, Va./Milton Hershey) ran for three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as Holy Cross defeated the Hoyas in Washington, D.C., 38-22. Staples had two short touchdown runs in the first half, but Holy Cross scored the first 24 points of the second half to break a 14-14 tie. It was the season opener for both teams. Holy Cross capitalized on a key turnover to start the second half. Georgetown fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and the Crusaders recovered it at the Hoyas three-yard line. Two plays later, Michael Gillis scored on a one-yard plunge as Holy Cross took a 21-14 lead. Georgetown went three plays and out their next two offensive possesions and Holy Cross was able to put together a 62-yard drive capped off by a 43-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. Georgetown was held scoreless until the 5:26 mark of the fourth quarter when Staples capped a 50-yard drive with a one-yard run. The Crusaders had 417 yards of offense, including 338 on the ground. The Hoyas were held to just 208 yards. Staples finished the day with 53 yards on 17 carries. Junior Sean Peterson (Gaithersburg, Md/Watkins Mill), making his first collegiate start at quarterback, was 12-for-30 for 125 yards. He threw one interception late in the first half that was returned for a nine-yard touchdown by the Crusaders' Michael Blake. George Sumner (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) had three catches for 25 yards, while All-American candidate Gharun Hester (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) led the team with 47 yards receiving. He had two receptions. Holy Cross sophomore quarterback Brian Hall had 116 yards rushing and threw for 79 yards. He had a touchdown run and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Nate Robbins.
