Georgetown and VMI Meet in Football

9/25/2003

GU at VMI
Saturday, Sept. 27
1 p.m.
Lexington, Va.
Alumni Memorial Field

The Skinny
GU and VMI have met on the gridiron five times over the course of the last 105 years, with GU winning all five affairs. In 2003 the Hoyas have lost their first three games by an average of 4.0 points while in VMI’s two victories they have held the opponent to nine points and won by an average 23.5 points. Both programs have recently switched conference affiliations with GU joining the Patriot League three seasons ago and VMI beginning Southern Conference play this year.

After allowing 42 points against Holy Cross in week two the Hoya defense gave up only 12 points versus Monmouth. The "D" notched five turnovers, held MU to 21 rushing yards, allowed only 225 yards of offense and recorded four sacks. Leading the charge was strong safety Brian Golper, who had eight tackles and a forced fumble and cornerback Jesse Patterson, who had his first career pick to go with five passes defended. GU’s offense found the going tough registering a season low 10 points, a season high three turnovers and allowing five sacks.

As a team VMI is posting 214.8 rushing yards a game while passing for 192.8. VMI’s Sean Mizzer is the hot ticket at running back, ranking sixth nationally by averaging 129.3 yards per game. On defense the Keydets are barely allowing 100 yards through the air (104.6) and have recorded five interceptions.
