Georgetown's Charlie Houghton Named Patriot League Rookie of the Week

Nov. 8, 2006

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University football player Charlie Houghton (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Phillips (Mass.) Academy) was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, it was announced by league officials on Monday.

It is the second straight week that Houghton has been named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week after winning the award for the week of October 30th. Houghton is one of two Hoya players that have earned a league weekly honor, joining junior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./John Edwards), who was named Offensive Player of the Week on September 25.

Houghton started for the first time in his career during Georgetown's 24-10 loss at Charleston Southern. Appearing as the Hoyas' primary running back, he carried the ball 19 times for a season-high 79 yards. The first-year player also caught five passes for 46 yards, including the team's lone score, a three-yard pass from Bassuener in the third quarter. In addition, he returned three kickoffs for 46 yards.

Houghton posted 114 all-purpose yards and a touchdown as the Hoyas came from behind to snap a six-game slide with a 24-21 decision over Marist. Houghton ran for 71 yards and pulled down a 14-yard touchdown in the second quarter to pull Georgetown within seven after falling behind 14-0. The freshman also had three carries for 29 yards on the touchdown drive that cut Marist's lead to 21-16.

The Hoyas carried the ball 35 times for 168 yards overall, the fifth time in the last six games the team has run for at least 100 yards. Georgetown had averaged only 74.7 yards on the ground in the first three games this season, but has gained 828 in the last six games, a 138.0 per game average.

For the season, Houghton has carried the ball 47 times for 227 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He is fifth on the team with 14 receptions (117 yards) and has two touchdowns.

Georgetown (2-7 overall, 0-4 Patriot League) plays at Patriot League foe Lafayette on Saturday, November 11. Kickoff at Fisher Field is slated for 1 p.m. The Hoyas will conclude the season the following weekend on the road against another Patriot League opponent, Fordham.
