Tommy Hunter began working at Georgetown in 1979 as the director of intramural sports and special programs. In 1984, Hunter became head coach of the golf team. Currently, Hunter continues to guide the Hoyas and assists in athletic development projects. In 1997, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA East Regional Championship Tournament at The Homestead. The 1999 team was the first Hoya golf team ever to capture a BIG EAST Championship, and the 2004 season saw the Hoyas in the 2004 NCAA East Regional held at Yale Golf Course. Hunter's personal accolades include the Vicennial Medal at Georgetown University, distinguishing 20 years of service, as well as BIG EAST Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2004 along with Coach of the Year honors in District II in 1997. Hunter is a past president of the BIG EAST Golf Coaches and chair of the District II Golf Committee. Hunter also serves on the advisory board for the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and has been the keynote speaker for the ESPN Junior Tour. Prior to Georgetown, Hunter served as the assistant director of the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center at Fordham University. He remains an active member of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and has served on several committees, written various articles and conducted numerous seminars. Off the golf course, Hunter is an IAABO basketball official, Board #12, serving the interscholastic leagues in the District of Columbia, Howard County, Md. and Montgomery County, Md. He also is a staff member of the Capitol Conference Basketball League, which is a member of the NCAA Division III. Hunter grew up in Bethesda, Md., and attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. His undergraduate years were spent at Fordham University, where he earned a bachelor of arts in economics in 1977; from there he moved on to Temple University to study athletic administration and received his Master of Education degree. Hunter now lives in Rockville, Md., with his wife, Lisa, and three children, 19-year-old daughter Patty (who plays women's lacrosse at Pfeiffer College), five-year-old son Coley and three-year-old daughter Maggie. |
