Cook Qualifies for Amateur Golf Championship

8/8/2002

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Rising junior Nick Cook (Shelton Conn./Fairfield Prep) shot a 67 in Round One and 73 in Round Two of the US Amateur Qualifying Tournament at New Canaan Country Club last Monday, August 5, to secure third place and advance to the US Amateur Championship in Bloomfield Hills later this month. Cook’s 140 combined score fell two stokes shy of runner-up Jerry Courville, Jr. (138) of Shorehaven and three behind winner Andrew Svoboda (137) of Winged Foot. The New Canaan Tournament was one of 100 held nationwide between July 22 and August 6 to determine the national qualifiers. Cook is Georgetown’s first, and only, qualifier. In total, 312 golfers will participate at this year's Amateur Championship, with the lowest 64 scorers advancing to the second round.

The Championship will be held August 19-25 at Oakland Hills Golf Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and will be televised on ESPN and CBS.
