March 1, 2008 Washington, DC - Senior Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) notched five points, four goals and a assist, while sophomore Andrew Brancaccio (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) added two goals, as the No. 11-ranked Georgetown men's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals spanning the second and third quarters to pull away and top St. John's, 13-7, in front of 943 fans on a windy day at the Multi Sport Field in Washington, DC. The win improves the Hoyas record to 1-1 overall, 1-0 in ECAC play, while St. John's falls to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in the ECAC. St. John's opened up the scoring for the day with an unassisted goal by Justin O'Donnell, five minutes into the game. The Hoyas quickly answered with a goal from junior Jake Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Landon School) two minutes later. Senior Andrew Baird (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored his only goal on the day off a great feed from Cannon less than a minute later to give the Hoyas a lead they would never relinquish. Brancaccio and junior Chris Taylor (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) added two more goals to stretch the score to 4-1 after the first period. The Red Storm came within one halfway through the second, cutting the score to 4-3 after a man-up goal by Trevor Michaelson and even strength goal by Malcolm Miles. However, GU went on a seven-goal scoring streak over the next 15 minutes of play to pull out to an 11-3 lead. During the scoring drive, Cannon notched all four of his goals on the day, while Brancaccio, sophomores Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Eric Reinhardt (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also notched Hoya goals.
Graeme Gillespie ended the St. John's scoring drought at the 4:37 mark of the third quarter to pull the score to 11-4, but senior Scott Kahoe (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) and junior Todd Cochran (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) added goals to round out the Hoya offense. Rob Gannon, Drew Schanen and Tom Michaelsen scored the final three goals of the game for St. John's to bring the final score to 13-7 on the day. Junior goalie Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss) made 13 saves for the Hoyas, as junior backup goalie Christian McCormack (Basking Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) also saw playing time in the net for the Hoyas. Georgetown plays next on Sunday, March 9, at Syracuse.
