Washington, D.C. - Georgetown senior attacker Andrew Baird (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored the game-winning goal with 2:16 left in the second overtime period to lift the No. 12 Hoyas past visiting Hobart, 13-12 in ECAC action on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon on the Multi-Sport Field. Georgetown (3-2, 2-0 ECAC) has now won 13 straight games over the Statesmen. The final team statistics were nearly identical. Hobart held two-goal leads of 2-0, 5-3, 7-5. Georgetown didn't take its first lead, 9-8 until Hoya junior Todd Cochran (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) netted an unassisted even-strength goal with 5:11 to go in the third quarter. Baird finished with five goals and an assist while sophomore Craig Dowd (Easy Northport, N.Y./Northport) tallied two goals and two assists. Senior Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss) finished with 14 saves in the cage. Georgetown trailed 6-5 at halftime. The Hoyas tied the game at 7-7 when senior Dan D'Agnes (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) recorded his only goal of the day. The Blue and Gray outscored Hobart 6-3 in the third with all six of the Hoya goals coming from different players. GU led 11-9 after three periods. The Hoyas took their biggest lead, 12-9 two minutes into the fourth when Baird tallied his fourth goal after taking a pass from Ricky Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks). Hobart then scored the final three goals in regulation to tie the game at 12-12. Midfielder Mike Lazore started the run with his only goal of the day with an assist going to junior Matt Smalley with 11:39 left. The Statemen then pulled even closer, 12-11 with just 3:40 to go. Senior Jamie Kirk scored with Lazore assisting. Hobart's game-tying goal was set up by junior goalie Brad Hester, who entered the game to give Hobart 10 men on the ride. Hester scooped a ground ball, starting the transition game for the equalizer.
Kirk knotted the game at 12-12 with Hobart's leading offensive threat Daryl Veltman (4 G, 2 A on the day) feeding the assist. Both teams had offensive possessions in each of the overtime sessions. Kass strategically came out of the net to intercept a Hobart pass with less than 20 seconds to go of the first OT to thwart the Statemen possession. In the second overtime, Hobart won the initial faceoff and missed wide on a shot before the Statemen turned in over. Baird's heroics came on the ensuing Georgetown possession after a successful clear. The Hoyas worked the ball around and senior Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) picked up an assist from behind the net. |
