Georgetown and Navy Set to Meet for Annual Boyle Cup on Saturday

March 27, 2008

Special Online Video Of Georgetown-Navy Made Available Nationwide

Washington, D.C. - When the fourth-ranked Georgetown University men's lacrosse team meets No. 10 Navy on Saturday, March 29 in Annapolis, Md., it will be more than a meeting between teams rated among the top in the country.

The game on Saturday March 29 will mark the second annual Boyle Cup. The Boyle Cup is named in honor of longtime official Scott Boyle, who tragically collapsed and passed away while officiating the Navy-Georgetown game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on April 2, 2005.

The first annual Boyle Cup was played on April 1, 2006, with the Hoyas posting a 9-5 win over the Midshipmen. Georgetown maintained its advantage in the series in 2007, with a 10-9 win over Navy at the Multi-Sport Field.

Boyle was a tremendous ambassador of the game of lacrosse who was involved at every level of the game, whether it was little league, the collegiate level, the pros or even the World Games. He was well thought of throughout the lacrosse community. Scott's widow, Becky, and children, Kelly and Scott, will be guests and present the winner of Saturday's game a trophy in Scott's memory.

"I think it's something that helps to bring the lacrosse world together and put things in perspective a bit," Georgetown Head Coach Dave Urick said. "As much as we all try do well every Saturday, and as much as we try to win games, it doesn't hurt to be reminded that there are things that are more important in life. And if it helps people keep things in perspective, then I think we've done a good job."

The game on Saturday will be the 19th meeting all-time between Georgetown and Navy. The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series, 12-6, and have won the last four meetings.

The Hoyas are coming off a thrilling 11-7 win over previously top-ranked and unbeaten Duke last Saturday at the Multi-Sport Field. The win was the third-straight for the Blue and Gray and three student-athletes swept the ECAC Player of the Week awards, as senior Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) earned offensive honors, senior Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss) was tabbed the top defensive player and sophomore Ricky Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) was named the league's rookie of the week. Kass was also named the Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse.

Urick will be recognized during the CSTV national broadcast of the Navy game this weekend as a recipient of the United States Lacrosse Coach of the Week Award.
