4/20/2002 WASHINGTON, D.C.—The third-ranked Georgetown University men's lacrosse team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten to #13 Massachusetts 16-13 today in front of 2,151 on Harbin Field. UMass opened an 8-1 lead in the first quarter and held off a Georgetown comeback to earn the automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Championship. With the win UMass (10-2, 4-0) is assured a share of the ECAC Lacrosse League title while Georgetown’s overall record now stands at 9-1 and 3-1 in ECAC League play. Georgetown entered the fourth quarter down three, 13-10. Massachusetts’ Marc Morley buried a goal one-minute into the period but the Hoyas regrouped and ripped off two straight to close the gap to two. The first was a Steve Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) score, his fourth of the day, followed by a Jordan Vettoretti (Caramel, N.Y./Mahopac) tally. UMass controlled the ball on the ensuing face-off and regained a three-goal advantage after Kevin Leveille hit for his fourth goal. The Hoyas’ Trevor Walker (Haverford, Pa./Episcopal Academy) made his fourth with over nine minutes remaining. GU had eight shots at the goal in the final portion of the quarter but could not convert. UMass’ Morley completed the scoring after GU pulled goalie Scott Schroeder (Summit/Summit, N.J.) out of the cage in the final minute. Up three at the half UMass scored three of the third period’s first four goals. Walker’s first goal for GU interrupted the UMass outburst. Behind 12-7 Walker scored again only to be matched 40 seconds later by UM’s Leveille. Another blast from Walker and a Phil Vincenti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) rip, both in the final minute, closed the gap to three heading into the fourth quarter. Georgetown’s Dusseau hit two goals back to back to begin the second quarter. GU won seven face-offs in the quarter, led by Captain Mike Kanach’s (Annandale, Va./Annadale) five victories, to maintain possession of the ball the majority of the fifteen minutes. UM’s Chris Fiore scored the lone UMass goal but two Hoya goals to end the quarter closed the UMass advantage to three. Staab hit his second off a Vettoretti feed and Dusseau scored his third with 14 seconds to play. UMass opened the contest with four unanswered goals. Two of the UMass goals came off the stick of Kevin Leveille. The Hoyas’ Doug Staab (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) ended the Minutemen’s streak with a goal at the 8:28 mark. Another four-goal run by UMass put the Hoyas in an 8-1 hole with 1:34 to play in the period. Georgetown countered when Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took advantage of a UMass slashing penalty and scored the Hoyas second goal off a Staab assist. Dusseau’s four goals and one assist led the Hoyas while UMass’ Leveille led the Minutemen with four goals. The Hoyas outshot the Minutemen, 65-35 had more groundballs, 58-38, and won 19 of 33 face-offs. Georgetown’s Schroeder finished with eight saves. UMass’ Bill Schell stopped 18 of the Hoya blasts and allowed 13 goals. Georgetown closes out its remaining schedule on the road. GU travels to Baltimore, Md. on April 24, to play Loyola College at 4 p.m. The Hoyas then face Rutgers on April 28 and Syracuse on May 4. SCORE BY PERIODS:
