Georgetown University senior men's lacrosse player Jerry Lambe (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) was named the ECAC Lacrosse League's Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday afternoon. Lambe was one of four Hoya players named to the All-ECAC First Team.

The Hoyas finished the 2008 season with a 9-4 overall record, highlighted by a win over No. 1-ranked Duke in March.

Lambe led a Georgetown defensive unit that limited opponents to 10 goals or fewer nine times this season and has been one of the most dominant in college lacrosse. He picked up 13 ground balls and had seven caused turnovers this season while guarding the opposing team's top offensive player week after week.

The senior quad-captain, who was a semifinalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is given annually to the top player in college lacrosse, has been named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year for the last two seasons. A three-time All-ECAC selection (he earned second team honors as a sophomore in 2006), Lambe started the last 38 games of his career, appeared in 53 and collected 75 ground balls. Lambe is the third Georgetown player to be named the league's defensive player of the year and the second to win the award twice, joining Kyle Sweeney, who won it 2001-02.

Others named to the All-ECAC First Team include senior attack Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School), sophomore middie Andrew Brancaccio (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) and sophomore defender Barney Ehrmann (Baltimore, Md./Gilman).

Cannon was named All-ECAC First Team for the third-straight year. He capped off a spectacular career this year by leading the team in scoring with 23 goals and 21 assists for a career-high 44 points. Cannon, who missed the last game of the season after spraining an ankle in the game at Rutgers, ranked 12th in the country in points per game (3.58) and 17th nationally with 1.67 assists per game. He finished his career at Georgetown with 157 points, which ranks seventh all-time. Cannon was 12th all-time in goals scored (73) and third all-time in assists (84).

Brancaccio, who earned All-ECAC honors for the first time, finished fourth on the team in scoring with 20 points, tallying 18 goals and two assists. He was second on the team in shots (72) and third in goals scored (18). In two years, he has 38 career goals and three assists for 41 points. Brancaccio scored 20 goals and had one assist as a freshman and earned honorable mention All-America honors.

Ehrmann earns All-ECAC honors for the second time in his career after being named second team as a freshman. The 6-5, 210-pound defender had a strong season on the back line for the Hoyas, leading the team with 52 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. In two years, he has 98 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers.

Since the start of the ECAC Lacrosse League in 2000, 30 players have earned 51 all-league honors. The Hoyas have now had 23 players earn 36 first team selections.
