May 31, 2007 Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University freshman attack Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) was one of 120 players selected by US Lacrosse to participate in tryouts for the United States team that will compete in the 2008 International Lacrosse Federation Under-19 World Championships from July 3-12, 2008 in British Columbia, Canada. The 120 players were selected from a pool of 235 players that were nominated by area chairmen of the US Lacrosse Men's Division Coaches Council High School Committee and collegiate coaches. The tryouts for the 2008 U.S. Under-19 team will be held from July 12-15, 2007 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. A roster of 23 players will be selected. Dowd enjoyed a strong freshman season, appearing in 14 of 15 games for the Hoyas and earning ECAC Rookie of the Week honors once during the campaign. He finished third on the team in scoring with 25 points, coming off of 17 goals and eight assists. He was fourth on the team in goals (17) and fourth in assists (8), eight in shots (37) and the best among all regulars on the team with a 45.9 percent shot percentage (17 goals on 37 shots). In addition, Dowd scored six man-up goals and had two game-winning tallies. During the season, he had eight multi-point games and five games with at least two goals. He tied his career-high of five points on two occasions, scoring five apiece against Hobart and Penn State. Dowd scored a career-high four goals against Hobart in March. Dowd helped lead Georgetown to a 12-3 record this season. The Hoyas reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth-straight year, were selected to play in their 11th-straight NCAA Tournament and won the ECAC Regular Season title for the second-straight year and for the sixth time since the league was formed in 2000. He is one of six current or future Georgetown players who will be trying out for the team. Five members of the Class of 2011 will also participate in the tryouts: incoming freshmen attack Nick Heitz (Darien, Conn./Darien), Dan Hostetler (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Ryan Shuler (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep), incoming freshman middie Max Seligmann (Essex Falls, N.J./Delbarton) and incoming freshman defender Bobby Boyle (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Lawrenceville School). This is not the first time a Georgetown player has been selected to participate for a national team. Current Assistant Coach, and 2001 alum, Scott Urick played for the United States National Team last summer during the world championships alongside former Hoya All-American Kyle Sweeney. During the World Championships, the Hoya pair on the United States team squared off against another former Hoya All-American, defender Brodie Merrill, who helped lead Canada to the team championship.
