June 7, 2006 Washington, D.C. - Former Georgetown University men's lacrosse player Pete Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) was named a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American, it was announced recently. Cannon was one of 48 players nationwide selected as a Scholar All-American and he was the only player from the ECAC Lacrosse League named to the list. Only players who were nominated for USILA All-America status could be chosen by institutions as Scholar All-America candidates, and they must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 to be selected. The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established in 1989 to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically, and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee chooses an overall team representing Divisions I, II, and III. Cannon graduated from Georgetown with a bachelor of arts in English, carrying a 3.24 grade-point average. The USILA Scholar All-American honor for Cannon was one of several for the middie following the Hoyas season. Cannon was a third team All-America selection by the USILA and earned first team All-ECAC honors as well. He was also the lone Hoya representative at the 65th Annual North-South Game, scoring two goals and adding one assist. The game, which matched players from Division I and II schools against those from Division III, was won by Cannon's squad. Following the NCAA Tournament, he was also one of three Georgetown players selected in the 2006 Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft. Cannon was chosen in the fourth round, the 36th pick overall, by the Philadelphia Barrage. He finished fourth on the team in scoring with 22 points off of 12 goals and 10 assists, which ranked second on the team. Cannon, who was an honorable mention All-America last year, had nine multiple-point games this year and finished his career with 64 points (42 goals, 22 assists). Georgetown finished the 2006 season with a 12-3 overall record and won the ECAC Lacrosse League Championship for the fifth time in the last seven years. Georgetown, ranked No. 5 in the country in the final polls by Inside Lacrosse and STX/USILA, reached the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight year and for the eighth time in the last nine years. This is the sixth time a Georgetown player has earned USILA Scholar All-American honors. Doug Meehan was named to the team in 1997, Scott Urick was selected in 2000, Tom Tamberrino in 2001 and Steve Dusseau and Michael Kamach were honored in 2002.
