Late Ricky Schramm Goal Sparks Hoya Men's Soccer Team to 1-0 Win at Villanova

Villanova, Pa. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team won for the 10th time in its last 11 regular-season games against Villanova, today as the Hoyas topped the Wildcats, 1-0 at the Villanova Soccer Complex. GU improves to 3-4 overall, 2-1 in BIG EAST play.

Senior forward Ricky Schramm (Eastchester, N.Y./Fordham Prep) notched his first game-winning goal of the season at the 87:06 mark. Scott Larrabee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Loyola HS of Los Angeles) earned his first career assist after sending a ball over the Villanova defense in Schramm's direction. Schramm then gathered the ball and made a nifty move against Wildcat goalkeeper Jason Friel. It was Schramm's team-best fourth goal of the season.

GU junior goalie Joe Devine (Exton, Pa./The Haverford School) set a new career-high with seven saves.

"The field was heavy and muddy so Villanova carried a lot of the chances," said head coach Brian Wiese. "But we also have Ricky and he's capable of sniffing out a goal in these type of conditions. Joe Devine made a brilliant save midway through the second half to keep us in it. I really felt that Villanova (3-4-1, 0-3 BE) didn't get behind us today, so credit our midfield and back four for doing a great job on a slick track."

The field was soaked from morning rains and there was some more precipitation during the contest. Georgetown's best chance came in the first half as sophomore Richard Frank blasted a free kick that hit the post.

Dan DeMasters sailed a shot just over the crossbar in the 36th minute for Villanova.

Devine's fantastic second half save came after Mike DelGuercio's shot from near the top of the box was blocked by a Hoya defender. The ball riccoched towards the crossbar but Devine tipped the ball over the top of the goal.

Georgetown was outshot 24-11 for the game and the Wildcats held the corner kick advantage, 9-2.

Georgetown won for the third-straight time in Philadelphia.

The Hoyas continue north to take on Rutgers on Sunday, September 17 in a BIG EAST match that kicks off at 2 p.m.
