Corner Kicks- The Georgetown Men's Soccer Blog

Sept. 24, 2008

Washington, D.C. - What's up Hoya Soccer Fans?

This is the season premier of the Georgetown Men's Soccer Blog.

Sorry we are starting a few weeks late, but in case you are not up to date with how the 2008 season has been going here is a quick recap. And I promise to keep in short and sweet so we can get to some more interesting things later.

The Hoyas are off to there best start in 10 years. Not only did we tie a Georgetown record starting off the season 5-0 but we also set the record for most consecutive shutouts to start a season. During those five games we had 13 goals with nine different players scoring goals. That is an impressive turn around to last year's combined total of 14 goals on the year. Along with solid play and personal team confidence, Georgetown soccer began gaining national recognition in both Big East and on NCAA soccer websites. We maintained a top 25 ranking for the last two weeks while also posting individual honors for Len Coleman and Ibu Otegbeye.

Looking at more recent events, the team split the weekend after hosting two solid Big East opponents. Friday afternoon, the USF Bulls came up to the Hilltop for the showdown that ended in a 2-1 loss for the Hoyas. Most of the players walked off the field filled with frustration at having felt they had let one slip away after Peter Grasso had opened the scoring only 15 minutes into the game. Without much time to sulk, the team quickly regrouped to play a well organized DePaul squad. The game winner came from Seth C'deBaca who hit a calculated right footed shot from the top of the box that hit off the bottom of the crossbar. The win brought the team back on track with a 6-2-0 record overall. The upcoming weekend will see the team headed up north to Rutgers on Friday night and Villanova on Sunday afternoon.

That was probably longer than I had hoped but at worst it gave those fans who were a little behind a chance to catch up to the Hoyas bid at history with a goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament.

A few random facts about the Hoyas:

Of the 25 players 20 have nicknames. A few examples are: Weirdo, Knife Hands, Meat, Jortz, Scuba Steve, Butter Cakes, ITackleForFun, The Kondor...

The most popular stop on team trips is Panera Bread

The team has both a Super Senior (fifth year senior) and an Over Eager Freshman (Freshman that came one semester early)

The current #1 hit in the locker room is Disturbia by Rihanna

Any questions, concerns, or if you simply want to say hi to one of the guys feel free to send us some feed back. Have a good week. WE ARE GEORGETOWN!
