Corner Kicks- The Georgetown Men's Soccer Blog

Oct. 22, 2008

Washington, D.C. - I am happy to announce that the Georgetown men's soccer team is back on track after a successful weekend up in Pittsburgh, Pa. Everyone on the team, including the coaches and parents, knew how important gaining three points at this stage in the season was and against a hardworking and tough Panthers squad.

As if on cue, the guys put together one of the best performances of the season. While the score line was deceptively close, the possession and the majority of offenses chances were created by the Hoyas. The first fifteen minutes saw a series of scoring chances until the combination of Scott Larrabee to Peter Grasso along the left side of the field created the decisive goal. I would just like to mention Chandler Diggs' hard run to the near post created the opening for Grasso though it was difficult to tell if he in fact made the final pass, due some erratic filming by one of our very own teammates.

A side note, while coach Zach Samol was a bit agitated at the film job, it did provide for comic relief during the weekly film session particularly when Larrabee is seen in a full- out sprint and the ball is no where to be seen.

Getting back to the game, the pressure by the Hoyas was relentless and if not for the sensational play of the Panther's goalkeeper the scoring margine would have been much greater. On one such play sophomore Seth C'deBaca flipped the ball over a defender's head only to have his shot blocked a flying goalkeeper. In actuality, Seth just gets enjoyment in crushing soccer balls at opponents chest's and wanted to make a statement that height would not hinder his ability to intimidate his opponents.

The last thing that I felt would be important to note about the game was that Matt Brutto made a spectacular save in the final part of the game to ensure the win and maintain his ridiculous goals against average. They should really call him Matt "Doughnut" Brutto. Doughnut referring to zero.

EXTRA TEAM NEWS: For all those interested in the condition of dynamic right back Ibu Otegbeye, you should probably ask him. Just kidding, he actually underwent a successful surgery of his ACL late last week and besides some gibberish that was heard while on pain killers Ibu has been his charming and energetic self.

HUGE GAME: While I am sure that all my readers are aware of the impact of the upcoming game I was just like to reiterate that it is huge! Coming into the game against WVU on Saturday, the Hoyas are entering with an 8-3-3 record and the third slot in the BIG EAST while the Mountaineers are only two points behind in fourth place. So if you are in the area or have been waiting to come out to a big game this is it!
