Men's Swimming Defeats VMI for First Dual Swim Meet Win of the Season

Georgetown won its first dual meet of the season by virtue of its 148-69 victory over the Virginia Military Institute in men's swimming and diving action at the Yates Field House on Saturday, January 22. Georgetown won every individual event except one en route to the victory.

John Willey (Sr., Riverside, Conn./Greenwich), Michael Dowley (Fr., McLean, Va./Langley), Chris Lengle (So., Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) and Brett Daggett (Fr., Wauchula, Fla./Hardee) were all double individual winners on the afternoon. Willey posted first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (22.31) and the 100 freestyle (48.32). He led a sweep of the 100 freestyle as Bryan Evangelista (Fr., Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Will Miller (So., Farmingdale, N.J./Freehold Boro) registered second and third-place times of 50.34 and 50.94, respectively. Evangelista also swam to a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.71.

Dowley notched first in the 200 I.M. (2:04.94) and in the 100 backstroke (59.28). Lengle was victorious in both the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.91 and the 100 fly (56.17). He also led a sweep in the 200 freestyle when Evan Behr (Fr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa./LaSalle) touched the wall in second (1:53.91) and Rob Johnston (So., Fairfax, Va./Flint Hill) nabbed third (1:57.61). Behr was also a winner in the 500 freestyle (5:09.39). He was followed by the Hoyas' Brendan Daly (Jr., River Forest, Ill./Fenwick) and Dan Gettings (Sr., Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) who each came in at 5:16.03 and 5:16.40, respectively, in a sweep of the event.

Daggett's double win came in the diving events as he scored a 152.93 off the 1m board and 148.95 mark from the 3m platform. Ross Savedge (Fr., Richmond, Va./Governors School) and Kevin Feder (So., Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo) had impressive swims as Savedge came in second in the 100 fly in a time of 56.72, while Feder posted 59.40 in the 100 backstroke.

Georgetown won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:46.93. Feder led off for the Hoyas followed by Matt O'Connor (So., Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day), Savedge, and Behr.

In exhibition swim, Lengle broke a pool record for the fastest lead off lap in the 200 freestyle relay. He led off with a time of 21.49, breaking the old mark of 21.57 set by Mark Liscinsky of American earlier this season at the Georgetown Potomac Relay Invitational.

The Hoyas are home for two meets this weekend as they face off against local rival Howard on Friday, at 6 p.m. at the Yates Field House before going against BIG EAST foe Providence on Saturday at 1 p.m.
