Georgetown Men Drop Meet at Drexel in Swimming and Diving

2/3/2003

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Georgetown swimming and diving teams competed at Drexel this weekend, losing in close competition to the Dragons in both meets.  The women were nipped 122 - 118 by the host team while on the men's side the Hoyas were outpaced 154.50 - 86.50.

Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La.) and Corrine Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) led the Hoyas with two first place finishes each.  Amaro touched ahead of the pack in the 200 and 500 Free while Rhodes took the 200 IM and the 100 Breast.  Colleen Newman (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame) and Michelle Herd (Canton Center, Conn./Westminster) each gained points for the Hoyas with first place finishes in the 1000 Free and 100 Back respectively, but the home team was just a little faster, taking the meet by four points.  Newman added a third place finish in the 500 Free.

On the men's side of the pool the best finish of the day came in a Hoya sweep of the 1000 Free event.  Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park), captain Jim McLaughlin (Plantsville, Conn./Southington High) and Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High) finished one-two-three, but a steady Drexel effort thwarted this impressive showing.  Hayden also added a first place finish in the 500 Free.  Captain Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took a first place finish in the 200 Free, touching second in the 100 Butterfly while Shodai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) earned the top spot in the 100 Free.

The Hoyas travel to Rutgers on Saturday, February 15th to race the Scarlet Knights in BIG EAST action for their final regular season meet of the year.
