School Records Broken at 2000 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships

Twelve Hoyas Qualify for ECAC Championships

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 23, 2000)-- Seven Georgetown records were broken at this year's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships held February 17-20, at the Goodwill Games Swimming Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Two relay marks fell while one swimmer eclipsed three of the five individual times.

Sophomore Chris Lengle (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) set the new mark in the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.19 breaking Chris Hazelton's old mark of 21.21 set last season. Senior Meghan Welch (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) broke her own record in the 200 breaststroke, which she set last year. She posted a time of 2:21.96 over last year's mark of 2:22.20. Lauren Moynihan (Fr., South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) shattered three records at the Championships. Her time of 5:08.72 in the 500 freestyle topped the old mark of 5:11.00 set last season by teammate Amanda Anderson (So., Denville, N.J./Morristown-Beard). She swam the first 1,000 yards of the 1,650 freestyle in a record time of 10:33.35, eclipsing the 10:38.85 time set in 1987 by Elkie Geiblers. Her final tally of 17:27.79 in the 1,650 freestyle broke another of Anderson's records (17:45.99) set last season.

The team of Sophia Adkison (So., Novato, Calif./Novato), Liz D'Auria (Fr., Newton, Mass./Newton South), sophomore Lauren Schmidt (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr), and Moynihan set the new 200 freestyle relay mark of 1:38.50, while the men's team of Will Miller (So., Farmingdale, N.J./Freehold Boro), Chris Lengle (So., Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee), Bryan Evangelista (Fr., Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's), and John Willey (Sr., Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) registered a time of 6:57.65 in the 800 freestyle relay. The old mark of 6:58.71 was set last season.

Along with the various records broken, Willey, Erin Lenahan (Fr., Western Springs, Ill./St. Ignatius College), and Christine Gibadlo (Sr., Middletown, N.J./Middletown) became eligible to compete in this weekends Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. They will join Welch, L. Moynihan, C. Moynihan, Schmidt, Katie Hayes (Fr., Charlottesville, Va./Ablemarle), Adkison, Anderson, Genna McKeel (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep), and Lengle in the competition held Thursday through Saturday, February 24-26, at the Gloucester County Aquatics Center in Sewell, N.J.

The Hoyas' men's team ended the 2000 season with an overall record of 3-8 and an 11th place finish at this season's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship. GU's women's team concluded the season with a 7-6 mark and 10th-place mark at the Championships.
