Georgetown's Bower Inducted into Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown University head men’s and women's swimming coach, Bethany Bower was inducted into the Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday at a ceremony held in Oneonta, N.Y.

A two-time Hartwick MVP of the swim team, Bower was an All-American after finishing second in the nation in the 100m freestyle, fifth in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 200m freestyle at the 1983 Championships. She was also third in the 100m freestyle and fifth in the 50m freestyle at the NCAA meet in 1984. Bower was the New York State champion in the 50m, 100m, 100m and 500m freestyles in both 1983 and 1984. She was voted MVP of the 1984 meet.

Bower, some 17 years later, still holds the women’s records in the 50m freestyle (24.40) and the 100m freestyle (53.35). At one time, she held all the school records in the four freestyle races. Bower had the 200m freestyle record until Hartwick swimmer Gayle Gregory broke the mark last year.

Bower, entering her eighth season as head coach, led both the men’s and women’s 2000-2001 teams to a 7-3 overall record and a 13th place finish at the BIG EAST Championships.
