Georgetown Swimming and Diving Edged by Binghamton and Seton Hall

November 9, 2002

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Georgetown men and women’s swimming and diving hosted the Seton Hall Pirates and the Binghamton Bearcats this weekend at McCarthy Pool.  Both squads fell to Binghamton and Seton Hall in close competition but the women’s team took the Pirates to the brink before losing by a single point.  Once again Georgetown diving dominated its portion of the competition as Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./Covina High) and Michael Kizer (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) took first place in both the one and three meter diving events.  Other top performers for Georgetown were Diane Foglizzo (Rosemont, Pa./The Baldwin School) who finished first in the 100 breaststroke, Annie Moore (Blacksburg, Va./The Bolles School) who placed second in the 1000 free and third in the 500 free and Shondai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) who touched second in the 200 free and third in the 100 free.

Arguably the strongest showing of the day came at the end of the meet in the women’s 200 freestyle relay.  The Hoya contingent of Captain Liz D’Auria (Newton, Mass./Newton South), Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La.), Erin Lenahan (Western Springs, Ill./St. Ignatius) and Francesca DiSilvio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham High) raced to first place ahead of Binghamton and Seton Hall, touching one tenth of a second before the Bearcats anchor.

Three new pool records were set in this weekend's meet.  The Binghamton women's 200 medley team finished with a time of 1:51:53, breaking the old mark of 1:51:64 set in 1995 by George Washington University.  Binghamton's Huijue Cai also eclipsed two McCarthy records, breaking the 50 free with a time of 24.50 and shattering the 100 butterfly best by more than a second.  Cai competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics finishing fourth in the butterfly.
