Washington, D.C. - Senior Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) took the singles and doubles crowns at the 2007 Georgetown Classic held last weekend at the McDonough Tennis Complex. The third-seeded Schnell dropped just one set en route to defeating top-seeded sophomore teammate Anthony Tan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Anglo-Chinese Junior College) in the finals of the singles event.

Tan entered the finals not having dropped a set after defeating classmate Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) in the semifinals. Lowell knocked off junior Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) in the quarterfinals as Walsh had earned a spot in the quarters after beating fourth-seeded Joe Vasoontara of Johns Hopkins in straight sets. Hoya junior Adam Gross (Quogue, N.Y./Westhampton) forced second-seeded Loic Sessagesimi of Marist to a three-set decision, but fell just short, matching Sessagesimi up against Schnell in the semis. After Sessagesimi retired in the semis, Schnell won the final over Tan in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) to win the singles main draw.

In the doubles event, Schnell teamed up with Walsh to win the draw in four matches, never dropping more than four games to their opponents. The duo defeated two other Georgetown squads as they eliminated senior Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and Gross in the semifinals, 8-4, and took an 8-3 decision in the finals against senior Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and junior Kenneth Wong (Repulse Bay, Hong Kong/St. Paul's [N.H.]). Tywang and Gross had defeated the fourth-seeded George Washington team to reach the semifinals while Paris and Wong had teamed up to take an 8-3 decision over the third-seeded team, also from George Washington.

The Hoyas return to action this weekend as they travel to the ECAC (East Coast Athletic Conference) Division I Men's Tennis Invitational at the USTA (United States Tennis Association) National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Hoyas have received the 11th seed at the event. BIG EAST Conference foe St. John's University was invited, earning a 10th seed and local foes George Washington University and University of Maryland - Baltimore County were also invited, seeded 13th and 14th, respectively. Play begins on Friday, September 28 and continues through to Monday, October 1.
