Hoya Men's Tennis Defeats St. Bonaventure on Final Day of ECAC Division I Invitational

Oct. 2, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team defeated St. Bonaventure, 6-1, on the final day of the ECAC Division I Invitational held in Flushing, N.Y. at the USTA (United States Tennis Association) National Tennis Center last weekend. The win placed the Hoyas 14th of 16 teams invited to the four-day tournament.

The Hoyas entered the tournament with an 11th seed and drew sixth-seeded Yale in the first round. Despite taking a lead by winning the doubles point, the Hoyas managed just two singles wins - both decided in three close sets - and lost, 4-3 to Yale.

The consolation draw pitted a 14th-seeded UMBC team against the Hoyas. In this match, the Hoyas dropped the doubles point and garnered three singles wins, losing again by a score of 4-3.

In the playoff for 14th place, Georgetown faced St. Bonaventure, a 15th seed in the event. Georgetown won all three doubles matches and only lost one singles match in a third-set super tiebreaker, defeating the Bonnies, 6-1.

Senior Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) went undefeated in all six of his matches - winning three matches at the sixth singles flight and three matches at the third doubles position with sophomore partner David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School). Tywang lost just one set to Yale's Tom Santoro en route to the six-match sweep.

Senior Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) was a formidable asset for the Hoyas as he and partner Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) went 2-for-3 in doubles action and Schnell posted two singles wins. Tillem added two singles wins, only dropping a match to Yale, while sophomores Anthony Tan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Anglo-Chinese JC) and Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) both recorded three-set super-tiebreaker victories against UMBC and St. Bonaventure, respectively.

The Hoyas return to action this weekend when they travel to Bradenton, Fla. for the Bollettieri Collegiate Challenge.
