Hoyas Split a Pair of Matches in Men’s Tennis

2/2/2002

The men's tennis team opened the spring 2002 season with two tough dual matches against local teams. On Friday evening the Hoyas downed a hard fighting Mary Washington squad 6-1. On Saturday evening the Midshipmen of Navy won all the close matches to send Georgetown to a 6-1 defeat. The Hoyas dual match record for the spring now stands at 1-1.

In the Friday match against Mary Washington, the Hoyas received strong doubles play from the #2 team of Ken Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Nick Sklavounos (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and the #3 team of Troy Crichlow (Milton, Mass./Milton) and beating Dennis Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep). Both Hoya tandems won at their positions and the Hoyas took the early lead 1-0 as the singles competition began. In singles play the Hoyas swept the first set at every position in the line-up, but Mary Washington was not deterred and they responded by winning the second set in four of those matches. Only Cravedi at #2 singles and Erik Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin School) at #4 singles were able to put their opponents away in straight sets. Cravedi defeated Loden 7-6(0), 6-3 while Bildman downed Rogers 6-3, 6-4. The decisive fourth team point which gave Georgetown the team match win came from the racquet of Crichlow at #3 singles as he defeated Dan Uyar 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Three set wins were also recorded by Sklavounos at #5 singles and Jordan at #6 singles. The only Hoya loss in singles came at the tough #1 position where Lohser fell to Smith 5-6, 6-1, 6-3. The final margin for the Hoyas of 6-1 was not an indicator of the closeness of the match.

In the Saturday match the Hoyas were hosted by the Naval Academy Midshipmen. In the doubles matches that opened the team competition, the Hoyas had their chance. Again the #2 and #3 doubles teams performed well but they needed a bit more to get past the Navy tandems. At #2

doubles Sklavounos and Jordan fell to Cameron Lickle and Phil Voulgaris 9-7. At #3 doubles Crichlow and Cravedi fell to Ryan Osgood and Davy Lee 8-6. Navy outplayed the Hoyas in doubles, but not by much and they took a 1-0 lead into the singles competition.

In singles play, Georgetown fell behind 2-0 as Navy's Osgood dropped Cravedi at #2 singles 6-1, 6-1. Navy went to a 3-0 lead as Lohser fell to Lickle 6-4, 6-3 at #1. At #4 Bildman lost a tough straight setter to Voulgaris 6-4, 6-4. Sklavounos lost a tight second set to lose 6-2, 7-6 to

Thurston at #5 singles. Hoya Crichlow finally got the Hoyas on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over McGrath at #3 singles. The final match of the evening saw Jordan lose a third set lead and the match to Lee at #6 singles 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The final score was Navy-6, Georgetown-1.

Next up for the Hoyas is their first ever meeting with BIG EAST Conference power Virginia Tech, currently ranked #53 in the country. The Hoyas face the Hokies at the Va. Tech Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday February 10 at 5 p.m. Tech boasts a strong singles and doubles

line-up featuring Kadiri at #1 singles and the #1 player in the East, Lalund at #2 and the #4 player in the East and Huot at #3 singles and the #14 ranked player in the East.
