Radford downs Hoyas 3-2; Dukes defeat GU, 5-0.
This past weekend Georgetown traveled to the Virginia Commonwealth University 4-1 Invitational tennis event held in Thalhimer Tennis Center, Richmond, Va. The Hoyas played a tight best of five dual team match against Radford on Friday afternoon but came up on the losing end, 3-2. That evening, GU faced a tough James Madison team and lost 5-0. The Hoyas, 2-5 on the season, have suffered five-straight losses. In the afternoon match versus Radford, Georgetown's No. 3 singles player Troy Crichlow (Fr., Milton, Mass./Milton) picked up the Hoyas first win of the day, defeating Radford's Christian Buttazzoni, 6-2, 6-2. The other singles players for Georgetown had a tougher time against the Radford team. At No. 1 singles, Hoya Nick Sklavounos (So., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) faced off with Faycal Rhazali and lost the first set quickly, but then got on track and put together a better second set before falling 6-0, 7-5. In the No. 2 singles match Andre Benjamin (So., New York, N.Y./Fieldston) was bested by Radford's Novfayl Nejdi 6-0, 6-0. The final singles match of the night, No. 4, pitted GU's Beau Brewer (Sr., Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) against Radford's Kahlid Lhamidi, with Brewer losing 6-2, 6-2. Georgetown added its second victory in doubles. Ken Jordan (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Dave Boyer (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) teamed up at No. 1 and blew threw Radford's team of Phil Lobb and Rachid Lamirissi, capturing the victory 6-3, 6-2. Friday evening, Georgetown took the court against James Madison. The Hoyas had some well played games but were unable to string enough together to win a match against the Dukes, falling 5-0. At No. 1 singles Georgetown had Crichlow, who started the first set slowly but then regrouped himself in the second before losing 6-0, 6-3 to JMU's Luis Rosado. Jordan played No. 2 singles for GU and was unable to overcome the impressive game of the Dukes'Andrew Lux dropping the match 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 3 singles slot the Hoyas had Kris Grajny (Fr., Slingerlands, N.Y./Hotchkiss), who played a close first set before falling 6-3, 6-1 to Mike Hendricksen. In a 6-1, 6-3 loss GU freshman Jay Brupbacher (Sparta, N.J./P. John XXII) could not overcome a slow start against Tim Brown of JMU. The final match was at No. 1 doubles where Andre Benjamin and Nick Sklavounos led the Hoyas. Hoping to pick up one victory, GU's tandem played a smart match but were unable to close out James Madison's Janey Elliott and Troy Stone losing 6-3, 6-4. The Hoyas are in action again on Sunday against Maryland. Match time is set for 12:45 p.m.
