Men's Tennis Posts 1-3 record in South Florida

The Hoyas faced some challenging competition during their four matches this past week in South Florida. Georgetown went 1-3 in South Florida, making their overall record 3-10 for the 1999-2000 season.

vs. Louisiana-Monroe
The first match of the week, hosted by the University of Miami, was against the University of Louisiana Monroe on Monday, March 6. Georgetown lost the match by a count of 7-0. The match was and began with the doubles competition. At #1 doubles, the freshman tandem of Marc Lohser (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Troy Crichlow (Wilton, Mass./Milton) fell behind two breaks of serve but made a nice recovery before losing 8-6 versus ULM's Bailey and Dabrowski. Hoyas Andre Benjamin (So., New York, N.Y./Fieldston) and Nick Sklavounos (So., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) were in every game at No. 2 doubles, but won only three, losing 8-3 to Pizkozub and Breux. In the #3 doubles match, Dave Boyer (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Ken Jordan (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) fell 8-6 to Bozo Markovic and Jaime Pombo.

With a 1-0 deficit as the singles competition began, the Hoyas struggled against the ULM line up. Sklavounos fell to the strong play of Robert Bailey 6-2, 6-2 in the #1 singles match. Crichlow fell to Pombo 6-1, 6-2 in the #4 singles match. Lohser lost to Piskozub 6-0, 6-3 at #5 singles. Beau Brewer (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) went down 6-1, 6-4 to Doug Breux at #6 singles. Jordan battled the tough serve of 6'6" Markovic, but fell 6-3, 6-4 at #3. Benjamin was the only Hoya to capture a set in singles play, but he fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to Dabrowski at #2.

vs. Boston University
The Hoyas took on Boston University on Tuesday, March 7, at the North Miami Tennis Center and won 5-2. Georgetown started solidly capturing the doubles point behind wins by Sklavounos and Benjamin at #2 doubles and Boyer and Jordan at #3. The No. 2 team won over Mofsky and Moosa 8-5 and the #3 tandem defeated Frem and Deblank, 8-2. The Hoyas played inconsistently at the #1 doubles position with Lohser and Crichlow losing to Koetzke and Wolf, 9-8, (12-10).

With a 1-0 lead, Georgetown capitalized immediately, receiving strong play from the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. Brewer was the first off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Moosa at #6. Lohser was next, a 6-1, 6-2 victor over Deblank at #5 singles.

Crichlow followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mofsky at #4 singles. Sklavounos added to the point total with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Koetzke at #1 singles. Boston U. took the final two singles matches as Benjamin lost 6-4, 6-1 to Frem at #2 and Jordan lost to Wolf 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.

vs. Lynn University
On Thursday, March 9, the Hoyas visited the Boca Raton campus of Lynn University to take on the Division II Pirates. The final score of the match had the Hoyas losing 7-0. The match started with Georgetown winning only three games during the three doubles matches. Forgas and Obront defeated the No. 1 team of Lohser and Crichlow 8-0. The #3 tandem of Boyer and Jordan were downed 8-0 by Mugica and Sancho. Only Benjamin and Sklavounos scratched out games on the scoreboard for the Hoyas, falling 8-3 to Saluste and Almeida at No. 2.

In singles play the Hoyas ramped up their level of play, doing a much better job after the doubles performance. Sklavounos dropped his match at #1 singles to Forgas 6-3, 6-2. Benjamin lost the No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-4 to Carenko. Jordan fell at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3 to Almeida. Crichlow lost the #4 singles match 6-1, 6-2 to Mugica. Brewer lost the No. 6 singles match to Planting 6-4, 6-3. Only Lohser claimed a set as he fell to Sancho 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.

vs. Barry University
On Saturday, March 11, the Barry University Buccaneers hosted the Hoya men in Miami Shores, Fla. For the second match in a row Georgetown was shut out losing 7-0. The competition began with the doubles matches and the Hoyas once again struggled. The bright spot on the day in doubles was the play of Boyer and Jordan at the #3 position. They had chances in the match but fell 9-7 to Baust and Lancombe. The Hoyas top two doubles tandems won a combined one game. Crichlow and Lohser fell to Meyer and Witt 8-1, while Benjamin and Sklavounos lost to Soulier and M'Bouka 8-0 at No. 2.

The singles competition was a more closely contested affair. At #1 singles, Sklavounos battled Meyer in a 6-2, 6-3 loss. Lohser won his second set but fell in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to Witt at No. 2 singles. Crichlow was sidetracked by scoring issues and fell 7-5, 6-2 to Soulier at #3. At No. 4 singles Brewer lost 6-2, 6-1 to Holobec. Benjamin was turned away 6-3, 6-3 by Baust at No. 5. In the last match of the day, Jordan lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Trussell.
