Men's Tennis Upsets No. 7 Villanova to Advance in BIG EAST Tennis Championships

MIAMI (April 20, 2000) -- Georgetown's 10th-seeded men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2000 BIG EAST Tennis Championships with an upset of No. 7 seed Villanova, 4-2, in the first round on April 20 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hoyas (6-20, 0-4 BIG EAST) face No. 2 seed and 29th-ranked Notre Dame on Friday.

GU claimed the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The tandem of Marc Lohser (Fr., Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Beau Brewer (Sr., Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) defeated Robert Waibel and Josh Schofield, 8-6 at No. 1. Hoyas' Nick Sklavounos (So., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Andre Benjamin (So., New York, N.Y./Fieldston) bested VU's Mike Mock and Ramon Prats, 8-5 at No. 2. Dave Boyer (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Ken Jordan's (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) match at No. 3 was halted after GU won the point.

Leading 1-0, Georgetown won three of the six singles matches to earn the victory. Waibel downed Sklavounos 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 to tie the contest. Lohser lifted GU to 2-1 advantage with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Mock at #2. The Wildcats tied it again at 2-2 when Rohde handed Jordan a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 6 singles. But, three-set victories at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions allowed GU to continue on to the next round. Hoya Troy Crichlow (Fr., Wilton, Mass./Milton) won his first set in tiebreak, 7-6(6). He lost the second set 4-6, but had more energy in the end to defeat Schofield 6-1 in the third at No. 3.

Benjamin's victory was a little more stressful at No. 5. He lost the first set 3-6 but managed to win the second in a 7-6(6) tiebreak. After that, the momentum shifted in Benjamin's favor as he went on to win the third set 6-1 over Paul Moore.
