Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's track and field team started their 2007-08 indoor seasons in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday afternoon, at the Bison Opener. The women had three individuals qualify for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships while the men also had three members qualify, along with two for the IC4A Indoor Championships. Freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) was one half of the duo that qualified when, in his first collegiate indoor meet, set a school record with a winning time of 8.10 seconds in the men's 60 meter hurdles. In his first meet wearing the Blue and Gray, freshman Matthew Jimenez (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 14.73 meters and then ended up in 12th of the men's 60 meter dash with a time of 7.16 seconds. Jimenez's throw qualified him for the BE Indoor Championships. Also making their debuts were freshman Toby Ulm (Marlborough, U.K./St. John's School and Community College) and classmate Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha). The duo finished first and second respectively, in the men's 500 meter dash. Ulm clocked in at an IC4A qualifying time of 1:04.01 and Suber completed the race in 1:06.03. On the women's side, senior Ashley Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) won the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.27, finishing a full seven seconds ahead of the next competitor. Sophomore Tanore Barrow (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) earned a fourth place finish in the women's shot put after a throw of 12.57 meters. Junior Buky Bamigboye (Brentwood, Tenn./University School) finished sixth in the women's 60 meter hurdles at 9.12 seconds, but her preliminary time of 8.87 qualified her for the BE Indoor Tournament, joining Hubbard and Barrow. Bamigboye also earned a top-ten placing in the women's long jump, coming in sixth at 5.32 meters.
The women's 4x400 relay team of junior Charlena Tillett (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Bamigboye, senior Alex Baptiste (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and Hubbard were also victorious, taking the event with a time of 3:53.26, almost three seconds better than the second-place Morgan State quartet. Sophomore Danny Harris (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) won the men's 1000 meter run with a time of 2:33.43, while sophomore Kelvin Hill (Murfeesboro, Tenn../Siegel) finished third (2:34.52) and junior Ricky Barrios (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) came in sixth (2:40.92). Freshman Ryan Carter (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.97. Freshman Deidra Sanders (Memphis, Tenn./Eastern) finished second in the women's 500 meter dash at 1:18.92, only 1.29 seconds behind Tanisha Kendrick of Morgan State. sophomore Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northhampton) also came in second in the women's 200 meter dash at 26.21, less than a second behind Landria Buckley of Howard. Sophomore Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey) was fourth in the 300 meter dash with a time of 41.49 and freshman Kyla Cook (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) finished fourth in the women's 200 meter dash with a time of 26.63 in her first Hoya meet. |
