Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's track and field team is ranked No. 18 in the country in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) indoor rankings, released on Wednesday evening. The Hoyas, ranked 19th in the country two weeks ago, moves back into the top 25 after a one-week hiatus. Arizona State has taken over as the No. 1 team in the country, followed by Florida State, Tennessee, LSU and BYU to round out the top five. The only school to represent the BIG EAST Conference in the top 25, Georgetown is also the lone school from the Northeast. The Hoyas earned this ranking after a strong showing at the BIG EAST Conference Championship where they finished third overall. The Blue and Gray turned in a number of top performances including the DMR squad made up of junior Andrew Bumbalough (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy), freshman Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha), junior Michael Banks (Holden, Mass./Watchussett Academy) and senior Matt Debole (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) who ran an NCAA qualifying time of 9:33.60 to take second place in the event. Junior Kenny Mitchell's (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) 6.73 performance in the 60m was enough to win the event as well as meet an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Bumbalough clocked in with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8:08.41 in the 3000m to take second place at the league championship. He turned in an additional second-place performance in the mile with a time of 4:01.61. Junior Levi Miller (Belfast, N.Y./Belfast Area) finished second in the 5000m timing at 14:08.36, enough for an NCAA provisional qualifying time and was the first of four to finish donning the Blue and Gray in the Hoya-dominated event.
Debole added an additional second-place finish for the Hoyas when he paced four GU runners with a 2:23.84 performance in the 1000m. The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are released on Wednesdays during the indoor season. The rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri. The 2008 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark. |
