Georgetown Women's Basketball Wins First BIG EAST Road Game at St. John's, 53-45

Queens, N.Y. - Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) had 13 of her game-high 15 points in the second half and Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Southeastern Illinois J.C) posted 11 points as the Georgetown University women's basketball team notched a 53-45 BIG EAST Conference victory at St. John's on Saturday afternoon. Georgetown surpasses its win total of last season and improves to 11-5, 1-2 in league play.

Junior forward Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) scored eight points and became the 20th GU player to eclipse the 1,000 point mark.

Freshman Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) compiled eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Freshman Kenya Kirkland (Brooklyn, Grand Street Campus) tallied two points, three rebounds, one block and one steal in 12 minutes off the bench.

Georgetown won for the fifth time when they trailed at halftime.

In the second half, Heidloff hit the team's first three-pointer of the game at the 16:14 mark to pull the Hoyas within 32-28. Marlow followed her own miss with a layup at 13:54.

On the ensuing possession, a fast break chance for the Hoyas, Heidloff fed Kirkland for a layup which tied the game at 32-32 with 13:26 to go.

After the teams traded possessions, Heidloff gave GU their first lead since the early minutes, 35-32 with a three from the corner.

Through the first 12 minutes of the second half, Georgetown went to a full court defense and forced St. John's into eight turnovers. With seven minutes to go in regulation, the Hoyas had hit 7-16 field goals and led 40-34.

Georgetown was in the double bonus, shooting two free throws over the final 6:04.

Marlow made a layup with 5:33 left, a field goal that 1,001 career points.

 

 

Two minutes later, Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) hauled in a rebound and threw a long outlet pass to Heidloff who was all alone for an easy layup that gave GU their biggest lead, 51-40.

At the 3:21 mark, Georgetown was 11-20 from the floor in the period (55 percent) while St. John's was just 5-22 (22 percent).

GU trailed 26-20 at intermission, marking the tenth time the Hoyas trailed at the break. Aminata Diop and Shanice Fuller both had five points.

St. John's (4-10, 0-3 BE) held a 21-15 rebounding advantage through the first 20 minutes with 11 Red Storm boards coming in the offensive end. SJU also turned 12 Hoya turnovers into 13 points. Georgetown was 0-10 from behind the three-point line.

Eighteen of the game's first 27 points came in the paint as St. John's held an 18-12 lead with 6:25 to go in the first half. Both teams struggled shooting the basketball with each squad's field goal hovering around 30 percent over the opening 15 minutes of action.

Georgetown went scoreless for a five-minute stretch from 10:47 until 6:00 but was able to stay within eight points for the remainder of the half.

The Hoyas came into the game winning 11 of the last 12 meetings between the schools.

Georgetown hits the floor again on Tuesday, January 9 when the Hoyas host No. 13 Louisville in a BIG EAST Conference game that tips off at 7:30 p.m.
