Women's Basketball Tripped up at Marquette, 67-60

Milwaukee, Wisc. - Sophomore Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) recorded her third straight double-double 20 points and 14 rebounds but the Georgetown University women's basketball team was tripped up at Marquette, 67-60 in front of 3,019 hoops fans at the Al McGuire Center, the second-largest crowd in the building's history.

The Hoyas, who had four players in double figures for the seventh time this season, received 15 points and nine-assists from sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick). Junior Kate Carlin (Ambler,Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) netted 11 points while senior Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored 10 points.

With 14:19 to go, the game was tied 39-39 after Marlow scored on three straight baseline jumpers. But over the next eight minutes, Marquette went on a 19-9 run to take a 60-48 lead with 5:51 to go. In the stretch, MU hit 8-of-10 field goals, including two three's, while Georgetown was 3-for-13.

The Hoyas wouldn't quit as LeSueur scored the game's next six points, including two transition buckets as Georgetown trimmed their deficit to 60-55 with 3:49 remaining.

Marquette opened a 19-9 advantage as the Golden Eagles made nine of their first 15 shots (61%) and MU outrebounded the Hoyas 10-3 through the first nine minutes.

Georgetown cut it to 23-21 with 6:50 left as Carlin knocked down consecutive three-pointers and Heidloff hit two free throws in a two minute span. Heidloff, who was playing just 90 minutes from her hometown of Chicago, tallied five more points over the final seven minutes of the half as the Hoyas trailed 32-30 at intermission.

Georgetown held Marquette to just 4-18 shooting over the final 12 minutes of the first half.

 

 

Through the first 20 minutes, Marlow had a game-high 10 points while Carlin and Heidloff scored nine apiece.

The Hoyas have a quick turnaround and host Cincinnati on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at McDonough Arena. Tip-off for the BIG EAST Conference game is set for 8 p.m.
