Quick Start Fuels Notre Dame to Win Over Hoya Women Hoopsters

South Bend, Ind. - Senior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Acad.) scored 15 points but Notre Dame raced out to a 19-2 run and never looked back in a 73-48 win over the visiting Georgetown women's basketball team Wednesday night at the Joyce Center. Georgetown falls to 12-15, 2-12 in BIG EAST action. Notre Dame (19-8, 10-4) extends their season-best winning streak to six games.

Carlin scored in double-figures for the first time in 12 games and hit a game-high five three-pointers.

Sophomore forward Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) grabbed ten rebounds, marking the tenth time this season she had recorded double-figure boards. Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Southeastern Illinois J.C.) finished with nine points and six boards for the Hoyas while junior Kristin Heidloff collected seven points and a game-high five assists.

Carlin hit her fourth trey of the night and GU trailed 43-33 with 13:25 on the clock but then the Irish had a 13-0 spurt to take a commanding 57-33 advantage with 8:40 left to play. Charel Allen and Ashley Barlow both scored five points in the run for Notre Dame.

The Hoyas turned it over on six of their first seven possessions as Notre Dame raced out to an 11-0 lead at the 15:48 mark. GU's first bucket came on a dribble drive by Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) with five minutes gone by in the first half.

The Hoyas then trailed 22-7 before going on an 11-2 run and narrowed the gap to 23-16. Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hit a long three-pointer at 7:54 and Carlin followed with an even longer trey from the left wing as GU closed to 23-13 at 6:49. Heidloff hit a three of her own less than a minute later as the Hoyas got to within seven points (23-16).

 

 

The Irish went five minutes without a field goal, missing seven straight shots, as the Hoyas scored 13 unanswered points during the span. Georgetown handed out six assists on eight first half field goals.

Georgetown plays their final road game of the regular-season on Saturday, February 24 when the Hoyas visit Providence College for a 2 p.m. BIG EAST tilt.

-- Freshman guard Kenya Kirkland made her first collegiate start.

-- Georgetown falls to 0-11 all-time in South Bend.

-- GU freshman starting guard Shanice Fuller picked up her third personal foul just eight minutes into the opening period.

-- Georgetown trailed at halftime for the 18th time this season.

-- GU committed 11 of their 16 first half turnovers in the first nine minutes of the contest.

-- Junior forward Kieraah Marlow (16.2 ppg) didn't post her first field goal until the 6:45 mark of the second half.
