Feb. 24, 2007

Box Score

Providence, R.I. - Senior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Acad.) scored a game-high 18 points on 7-12 shooting with four threes to lead four Hoyas in double-figures as the Georgetown University women's basketball team earned a 73-66 win at Providence on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall in BIG EAST action. The Hoyas improve to 13-15 overall and 3-12 in BIG EAST action to keep their BIG EAST Tournament hopes alive.

Junior forward Kierrah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) netted 15 points while junior guard Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) added 12 points to go along with a game-high five assists. Junior center Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Southeastern Illinois J.C.) combined for 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hit three three-pointers, all in the last 4:53 of the second half for nine points.

Georgetown snapped a four-game slide and improved to 8-3 in afternoon games.

"It was a total team effort today," said Georgetown third-year head coach Terri-Williams-Flournoy. "The girls communicated and complemented each other much better than they have recently."

Georgetown took a 39-29 lead at intermission, marking the tenth time this season the Hoyas held a halftime lead but just the fourth time in league action. Carlin netted 16 first half points on 6-7 shooting including 4-4 from long range. GU hit 68 percent of their shots in the opening period (13-19), their best first half shooting performance all season long. Marlow and Heidloff posted eight points apiece.

The Friars went scoreless for a three-plus minute stretch as the Hoyas went on a 9-0 run midway through the first half. GU took their first lead, 17-16 with 11:00 to go in the first period on a Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton (Ill.)) steal and assist on a Diop layin. Marlow followed with a layup and then Carlin hit her third straight three-pointer in as many attempts as the Hoyas extended their lead to 22-16 with 9:31 to go.

Georgetown was shooting 75 percent (12-16) through the first 16 minutes of the period but PC was staying in the game with ten offensive rebounds and finished the period with 16 second chance points

Providence went scoreless over the final 3:24 of the half.

"We were able to knock down shots which opened up the inside game," added Flournoy. "I was pleased with how Aminata played. She's given up great efforts of late."

Providence hit their first three shots after halftime and closed to 41-36 as Shauna Snyder hit two quick shots. Snyder then scored on a backdoor cut to slice the GU lead to 43-42 with 14:07 to go. Snyder scored 10 of the Friars' first 17 points after intermission and PC clawed to within 47-46 at 11:57.

The Friars took their first lead since the early going on a Aga Lorenc layup at 7:21 but on the ensuing Georgetown possession, freshman guard Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) hit her only bucket of the day to give the Hoyas the lead back, a lead they would not relinquish.

Georgetown kept the pressure on and continued to execute on the offensive end taking a 61-55 lead with 3:21 to go as Cox hit her second trey in a 1:10 span.

Snyder hit a three-pointer at 2:13 to give her 19 second half points as PC closed to 63-60 but that would be as close as PC would get. Cox nailed another to up the GU lead to 66-60 to put the game out of reach.

The Hoyas play their final regular-season game on Monday, February 26 when GU hosts Pittsburgh. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Georgetown Athletic Department will recognize Hoya seniors Amber Dorsey and Kate Carlin as the duo will be taking part in their final home game inside McDonough Arena.
