Georgetown Falls to USF, 71-57 in Hoyas' Season-Finale

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a 71-57 BIG EAST decision to the visiting University of South Florida Bulls tonight in the Hoyas' final game of the season. Georgetown finishes with a record of 10-17, 3-13 in the league, while USF finishes their regular season with a 19-10 record, 9-7 in the conference.

Georgetown sophomore Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) finished with her fourth double-double in the last six games with 23 points and ten rebounds. Hoya senior Christine Whitt (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) set new career highs with 12 points and six field goals and started the game 6-6 from the floor. Senior Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) concluded her final collegiate game with ten points and six assists while senior Leslie Tyburski (Hammond, Ind./ Gavit) ended her career with four rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes of work.

USF shot 53 percent in the first half but Marlow countered with 18 points in the opening period as the Hoyas trailed 42-35 at halftime.

After the Bulls increased their lead to 11 points, 46-35 with 18:05 to go, Georgetown then made eight of their next nine shots from the floor and went on an 18-8 run over the next five minutes as the Hoyas clawed to within 54-53 with 13:12 left.

USF, put together a 12-0 run of their own over a four-plus minute span, getting five points from Jessica Dickson and Jessica Jackson to pull away, 66-53 with 8:25 left. The Hoyas missed five straight shots during the stretch.

The Hoyas made just one field goal over the final 13:12.

Georgetown sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) who missed the last two days of practice with the flu, handed out seven assists against 0 turnovers. Heidloff came into the game ranked second in the BIG EAST and 13th in the nation with a +2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.

 

 

Dickson, who came into the game as the nation's leading scorer (22.4 ppg) finished with 22 points on 10-22 shooting. Jackson and Nalini Miller tallied 21 and 11 points, respectively for USF.

USF earns the No. 7 seed in 2006 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament and will face No. 10 Notre Dame on Saturday, March 4 at 6 p.m. at the Hartford (Conn.) Civic Center.

Georgetown's senior class of Whitt, Tyburski and LeSueur were recognized before the game as the trio played their final game at McDonough Arena.
