Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team erased a nine-point halftime deficit and red-shirt sophomore Brina Pollack (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) hit the front end of a one-and-one with 10.8 seconds left as the Hoyas won their third straight game at East Tennessee State, 53-52 Friday night at Memorial Center. Georgetown improves to 3-2 while ETSU falls to 1-4. Georgetown held ETSU without a field goal over an 11:11 span in the second half. ETSU had a chance but freshman Siarra Evans missed two free throws with 00.4 seconds remaining and the Hoyas were able to grab the rebound. Freshman Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) finished with career-highs of 13 points and three treys. Sophomore Katrina Wheeler (Washington, DC/T Roosevelt) recorded the eighth double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 boards. Pollack added three assists and junior Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal, Southeastern Illinois J.C.) grabbed nine rebounds. Georgetown trailed 46-36 with 11:57 left and then 48-38 with 8:13 to go after Kenya Kirkland (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) dribble drive an score, that stopped a four-minute Hoya scoring drought. GU clawed to 48-42 with 6:11 to go after Wheeler converted an old fashioned three-point play and 40 seconds later Georgetown closed to 48-44 after a Wheeler's strong post move and bucket with 5:36. Wheeler then drew an East Tennesee State charge call with Georgetown trailing 50-47 with 3:53 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Cox hit a corner trey to tie the game at 50-50. Evans hit two free throws for ETSU at the 2:34 mark. Cox then fed Wheeler with an entry pass with the shot clock winding down and Wheeler recorded a layin with :39 left to tie the game.
After a missed ETSU shot, GU called their final timeout. Pollack was fouled as she crossed the halfcourt line putting her at the line for a one-and-one with 10.8 ticks left. Pollack hit the first but missed the second and ETSU called a timeout with 5.0 seconds left. In the tight first half, the game saw five ties and 11 lead changes. Georgetown freshman Meredith Cox came off the bench and had a career-high seven points in the opening stanza to lead the Hoya offense. GU went 4-6 from the floor to open the game to take a 9-2 lead but the Hoyas missed their next five shots as ETSU went ahead 10-9 seven minutes in. Michele DeVault made two three pointers in the early going for the Lady Bucs. ETSU took a 31-27 lead as Lady Buc freshman Siarra Evans scored on two straight ETSU possessions with 2:38 left. TaRonda Wiles then scored on a runner with 30 seconds to go. The Hoyas missed a field goal try ad ETSU hustled the ball down the floor and received a three from the corner by Holly Moring as time expired as Georgetown faced their biggest deficit, 36-27 at intermission. It marked the fourth time in the season's first five game, the Hoyas trailed at halftime. The Hoyas have a quick turnaround and will face Appalachian State tomorrow, Saturday, November 25 at 8 p.m inside at the Holmes Center. GU topped Appalachian State, 59-44 last season at McDonough Arena in the only other meetings between the schools. ASU, who plays out of the Southern Conference, will enter the game with a 2-2 record. The Mountaineers defeated Central Florida (64-44) and Alabama A&M (86-64) and lost to Georgia Tech (79-53) and East Tennessee State (104-87). |
