Georgetown Women's Basketball Makes 45 of 55 Free Throws in 81-74 Win at Appalachian State

Boone, N.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team once again came back from nine-point second half deficit and the Hoyas connected on 16-18 free throws in the extra session as Georgetown tripped up Appalachian State, 81-74 at the Holmes Center Saturday night. Georgetown won their fourth straight game to improve to 4-2.

Junior Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) notched a career-high 29 points and her 22nd career double-double with 11 rebounds to lead the Hoyas. Junior transfer Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Southeastern Illinois J.C.) posted career-highs with 17 points and 16 boards in a career-best 38 minutes. Senior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Acad.) dumped in 14 points off the bench and hit two first half three-pointers. Red-shirt sophomore Brina Pollack (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) scored a career-high nine points, all from the line and freshman Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Cath.) played a steady game once again with seven points, five rebounds, two assists and a career-high five steals.

Georgetown scored all 16 of their points in overtime from the charity stripe.

With the win, the Hoyas have won four straight games for the first time under head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy.

GU has trailed at halftime in five of their first six games and overcome a deficit to win in three of the last four games.

ASU had two different six-point leads in the beginning of the second half but Georgetown battled and climbed to within 38-35 on a Diop steal and layup.

At the 7:31 mark, GU was behind 49-48 before the Hoyas pulled to within 55-52 with 5:11 on a pretty backdoor cut and layup by Cox. On the next trip down the floor, Marlow hit a jumper with a hand in her face to give the Hoyas their first lead in the second half, 56-55.

The teams traded foul shots over the final five minutes and combined for just five field goals to close regulation.

Diop made a turnaround jumper to put Georgetown ahead, 64-63 with 48 seconds remaining just before ASU's Whitney Tossie scored on a driving layup with 33 seconds remaining.

Marlow was fouled going to bucket on the ensuing GU possession and made the first of two free throws to tie the game at 65. The second free throw was no good but the Hoyas got the carom forcing a rushed Cox three-pointer as time expired that was a bit short.

In the overtime period, Maria Grimes made a trey to give the Mountaineers a 68-65 edge. Marlow was fouled on a baseline jumper and hit the first foul shot to pull the Hoyas within 68-66 on the game's next possession before the marching to the charity stripes began. Georgetown made 15 of 16 from the line over the final four minutes, including a stretch of 10 straight.

Appalachian State led 26-25 at halftime as both teams struggled mightily from the floor. The Hoyas connected on 5-24 (20%) field goals and the Mountaineers made 9-29 (31%) shots. Georgetown stayed close by making 13 of their 17 first half free throws in a period that witnessed six ties and six lead changes.

GU started 0-5 shooting from the field but ASU began slowly as well making just one of their first seven shots with the Hoyas' first eight points came from the charity stripe. Georgetown's first bucket came on a Wheeler turnaround jumper at the 11:57 mark to give the visitors a 10-7 advantage.

The Hoyas continued to persevere through a 2-15 shooting slump over the game's first 13 minutes but trailed just 17-15 with 6:36 to play. Carlin tied the game at 19-19 with a corner three-pointer and the team's lone senior knocked down her second three-pointer of the night to tie the contest at 23-23.

GU scored 33 points off 25 ASU turnovers.

Georgetown continues its season-long five-game road trip on Wednesday, November 29 when GU travels to Mt. St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. for a 6 p.m. non-league game.
