Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team avenged a loss from last season Tuesday evening with an 82-55 victory over the Hampton University Lady Pirates at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas used the long ball to sink the Lady Pirates setting a school record for three's made in a game (11) along the way. GU is off to its best start under Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy with a 4-0 record, Hampton drops to 0-4 on the season. The Hoyas began the game with an 8-0 run fueled by five points from sophomore Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross). Georgetown controlled the tempo of the game forcing turnovers on the defensive end and getting good looks on offense. With a 14-point lead, GU staged another run holding a 10-2 advantage in a two-minute span thanks to back-to-back three's from junior Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic). With two minutes remaining and a 17 point lead, it was time for freshman Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) who had a pair of layups and a rebound as the seconds ticked off the clock. Georgetown went into the break leading 43-23 holding the lead the entire half. Crawford led all scorers in the first with 14 points and a team-best six rebounds. Cox added nine and McNutt had seven for the Hoyas. GU outrebounded the Lady Pirates 24-14 and shot 42.1 percent from the field. The Hoyas had only nine turnovers in the first while forcing 17 from Hampton. McNutt took over in the second half hitting 4-5 from beyond the arc and contributing a pair of steals. She hit consecutive three's to start the half and didn't let up as the Hoyas held on to the 20-point advantage. While GU took fewer shots in the paint, it was the guards that generated points from long-range.
"Moni (McNutt) played well when they (Hampton) switched to a zone," said Williams-Flournoy. "Moni, Meredith (Cox) and Karee (Houlette) all looked for the open shot when it was there. They read the defense well." Georgetown went up by as much as 33 with eight minutes to go after a trey from senior Karee Houlette (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs) and coasted to the 82-55 victory to stay undefeated on the season. GU's 11 three's for the game broke the school record for most trey's in a single game set in 2007. Georgetown outrebounded Hampton 46-31 and forced 28 opponent turnovers while posting 10 steals. "Once again Adria (Crawford) was great on the boards," said Williams-Flournoy. "I was pleased with our overall effort down low." McNutt led the Hoyas with a career-best 21 points and Crawford chipped in 18 points along with nine rebounds. Cox finished with 11 points and five rebounds for GU. On tap for the Hoyas is a trip to Los Angeles, Calif., over the Thanksgiving holiday. The squad will face North Dakota State on Friday in the opening round of the Ayers Hotel Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by Loyola Marymount University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., ET.
