Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to visiting Penn State, 52-44 Sunday afternoon in McDonough Arena. The Hoyas (8-4) had an eight-game non-conference winning streak snapped. Georgetown erased a 40-29 PSU lead with 8:52 to go and the Hoyas took a 42-41 lead with 3:19 left but GU missed their six field goal attempts down the stretch as the Nittany Lions pulled away. Hoya junior Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) recorded the 23rd double-double of her career with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) posted her ninth double-double with 10 points and a game-high 16 boards. Penn State held a 22-19 lead at halftime and made six of their first 11 field goals in the second half to take a 39-27 lead with 11:42 left. Georgetown trailed 40-29 with 7:40 to go but went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 4:37 left. GU had three freshmen on the floor for the entire run. Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) nailed a three-pointer and Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) scored six consecutive points on three straight offensive possessions. Penn State's Kamela Gissendanner connected on a jumper from the left elbow 2:07 to give PSU a 45-42 lead. Gissendanner then hit another jumper, banking a shot off the glass as the shot clock wound down, with 50 seconds for a 47-42 PSU bulge. Penn State held an early 8-7 lead through the first eight-plus minutes. The early going saw a combined 12 turnovers and 17 missed field goals. Georgetown took an 18-12 lead with 7:45 to after Marlow scored on three straight trips with two buckets in the paint sandwiched around her 10th three-pointer of the season as PSU was beginning a five minute scoreless stretch.
The Hoyas struggled from the field but held an 18-14 lead by outrebounding the Nittany Lions, 18-11 over the opening 17 minutes, with 10 coming the offensive end. PSU tied it at 19-19 as Adrienne Squire made her third trey of the half with 50 seconds left in the period. Squire led Penn State with 13 points while Gissendanner notched 12 points off the bench. Georgetown hits the floor again on Wednesday, December 20 when the Hoyas host Savannah State in non-league action at McDonough Arena that tips off at 7:30 p.m. Notes ... Marlow had 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half while Wheeler had six points and nine boards ... Georgetown trailed at halftime for the eighth time this season ... Wheeler complied her ninth career double-double in the first game's 30 minutes ...
