Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team never trailed and had four players in double figures for the second time this season in a 60-57 win over visiting Utah Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas improve to 10-4 overall and match their win total of last season. Utah falls to 7-6. Sophomore Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) had 16 points while junior Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) posted 11 points including three three-pointers. Senior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Acad.) and junior Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis Senegal, Southeastern Illinois J.C.) both added 10 points. Georgetown improves to 6-0 when they lead at halftime and 8-0 when they shoot for a better field goal percentage than their oppnent. The Hoyas took their largest lead of the game, 42-29 with 18:00 left in the game on post-move jumper by Wheeler. Georgetown missed their next four shots while Utah closed to within 42-36 with 12:30 left. Joh-Teena-Filipe knocked down two shots on consecutive trips down the floor for the Utes as Utah pulled within 50-47 with 7:09 to go. The game was in the balance for the next five minutes and with 1:59 remaining, Utah cut it to 58-56 on a Marie Warner jumper. Neither team converted on their next possession before GU's Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) fed Diop for a turnaround layin with 42 seconds left as the Hoyas held a 60-56 advantage. Georgetown was whistled for an intentional foul on Utah's next offensive set. Kalee Whipple mde one of two free throws to close the Utes' deficit to 60-57. Utah then settled for a long three-pointer that was short and the Hoyas came down with the rebound and ran out the clock.
Georgetown had a 36-29 advantage at halftime, the fifth time this season the Hoyas led at the break. Both teams shot the ball well with Utah shooting at a 50 percent clip (11-22) while Georgetown knocked down 56 percent of their field goals (13-23). Carlin had ten first half points for the Blue & Gray, hitting 4-6 shots from the floor, including two three-pointers. Georgetown was able to convert 10 Utah turnovers into 16 first half points. Utah received five points apiece from Joh-Teena Filipe, Morgan Warburton and Marie Warner. Georgetown never trailed prior to intermission and shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening period for the fifth time this year. It also marked the second straight game the Hoyas made half of their shots in the first half. Georgetown concluded their non-league slate Saturday and travels to Cincinnati on Wednesday, January 3 for a BIG EAST meeting with a Bearcats that tips a 7 p.m. |
