Women's Basketball Travels to Providence for Saturday Afternoon Meeting with Friars

Feb. 23, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (12-14, 2-11 BE) will look to snap a four-game slide when the Hoyas visit Providence (13-14, 3-11 BE) on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall at 2 p.m. The Hoyas will be attempting to break a five-game road losing streak while Providence has lost its last five home hames and is just 1-11 in its last 12 games. Georgetown has won four straight regular-season meetings over the Friars. The Hoyas are in the middle of a three-games-in-eight-day stretch.

With two regular-season games remaining, the Hoyas will need to earn two victories and get some help in order to qualify for one of the 12 BIG EAST Tournament spots. GU still has left to play at Providence on Saturday before concluding the regular-season with a home game vs. Pittsburgh on Monday.

The Hoyas are 7-2 when they lead at halftime, 11-2 when they shoot for a better field goal percentage than their opponent and 5-2 when they make at least 50 percent of their field goals.

Fast Breaks ... Junior guard Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) ranks seventh in the BIG EAST with 2.1 steals per game.

-- The Hoyas rank fifth in the BIG EAST, averaging 9.3 steals per game.

-- Junior forward Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) has 428 points this season, more than double of anyone else on the GU roster. Marlow has scored in double-figures in ten of the last 11 games. Marlow's has hauled in 616 career rebounds and is just the eighth GU player to surpass the 1,100-point and 600-rebound marks. Marlow is averaging 22.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.05 assists in two previous meetings with PC.

-- The Hoyas had won their first seven games when leading at the half but Georgetown has lost its last two games when holding the advantage at intermission (Seton Hall & Syracuse).

-- Sophomore forward Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) is averaging 10.0 rebounds in the last five games.

-- In the Hoyas' two BIG EAST wins, GU's opponents are shooting just 33 percent from the floor and averaging just 49 points. In Georgetown's league losses, their opponents are shooting 48 percent from the field and averaging 71 points.

-- GU has hit 35 three-pointers in its last seven games, its best seven-game, long-range shooting stretch against BIG EAST foes. Junior Kristin Heidloff (10) and Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) (13) have combined for 23 treys in the span.

-- The Hoyas have posted a 4-1 record in games decided by three points or less.

-- The team's only senior, Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's Academy) ranks fifth on the team with 6.0 points per game. Carlin, who will be playing in her 111th career game Saturday, set a school record with nine threes in the win over Fordham and the nine treys is also the single-game high by a BIG EAST player this season. Carlin ranks 5th in the league, shooting 36.3 percent from behind the arc. Carlin buried a game-high five three-pointers at Notre Dame on Wednesday.

-- Six-foot, five-inch center Aminata Diop, a transfer from Southeastern Illinois J.C., ranks fourth on the team averaging 6.1 points to go along with 5.4 rebounds. Diop is making 44 percent of her field goals after scoring 14 points on 5-6 shooting vs. Marquette. In the last three games, Diop is averaging 9.7 points per game on 57 percent shooting and 6.3 rebounds per game. Diop ranks second on the team with 21blocks. Diop started in 15 straight games but has been coming off the bench in the last nine games. Diop has posted two double-doubles, including a 17-point, 16-rebound effort in the OT win over Appalachian State and has netted double-figures seven times.

-- Wheeler, a McDonald's All-American out of T. Roosevelt H.S. in Washington, D.C., leads the team and ranks 8th in the BIG EAST with 8.1 rebounds per game. She ranks second on the squad with 8.2 points per game. Wheeler has already hauled down double-figure rebounds ten times this season after recording at least 10 boards on seven occasions all of last season.

Scouting Providence ... Providence (13-14, 3-11) has lost 11 of its last 12 games and its last five home games.

PC's three league wins came vs. then No. 13 Louisville (106-94) in double-overtime at Syracuse and at St. John's.

Sophomore guard Chelsea Marandola leads the Friar offense averaging more then 17 points per game. Sophomore guard junior guard Catherine Bove averages 12.0 points while Shauna Snyder averages 12.7 points per contest.

The Series ... Georgetown trails the all-time series with the Friars, 27-17. The Hoyas have won four straight games, including the last two contests played in Providence.
