April 28, 2005 WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown women's basketball head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy today announced the signings of two student-athletes for the 2005-06 season. Incoming freshman Katrina Wheeler is a McDonald's All-American from nearby Theodore Roosevelt High School and also joining the Hoyas will be Purdue University transfer Brina Pollack.
"These two players will have a tremendous impact on the Georgetown women's basketball program, not just next year but for years to come," commented head coach Williams-Flournoy. "Katrina will be an immediate contributor for us next season and we expect great things from her starting on day one. While Brina has to sit out next season we are excited to have a great competitor practicing every day. Both players come from winning programs and know what it takes to be a winner." Wheeler is a dominating 6-4 forward that amassed over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her high school career. She was a USA Today Pre-Season Super 25 High School player as a senior and ranked 34 out of 300 by Michael T. Whites' All Star Girl's Report. Wheeler earned Washington Post All-Met honors three straight years including First Team in 2004, Second Team in 2005 and Honorable Mention in 2003. As a senior this year Wheeler averaged 17 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks a game after posting similar numbers as a junior, 17 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. She led her high school to the District of Columbia city title game two straight seasons and won the title in 2004. Wheeler was a member of the USA Developmental Festival's East squad last summer, which won the bronze medal. Pollack will have to sit out the 2005-06 season due to NCAA transfer rules but will be allowed to practice with the team. Pollack is a 5-8 guard who began her career at Purdue University, playing in 28 games and starting 10 in 2004-05. She shot 43.9% from the field during the year and connected on over 71% of her free throws. As a high school standout at Marlboro High School in Marlboro, New Jersey, Pollack was named a 2004 adidas/EA Sports Superstar and scored 1,573 points in her career. She was a First team Group 4 all-state selection in 2003-04 along with earning Associated Press Third team all-state honors. Pollack helped lead Marlboro to Central New Jersey Group 4 state championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004 along with runner-up status in 2002. She was a 2003 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival participant. Both players join a squad that in Head Coach Williams-Flournoy's first season finished sixth in the BIG EAST Conference. The Hoyas return four starters and seven letterwinners from the 2004-05 season.
